another thread claims it's a fact: women are catty. unfair/untrue/unfortunate generalization? or is the poster correct -- women are catty?
Throughout my working years I have always worked predominatly with women. And yes, I have noticed that get a group of women together and the claws come out. Now, before I get flamed, not ALL women get that way. Some, like me, can back away from the the drama and cattyness that happens. I hate the catty crap and had mostly boys as friends in school and I have more men close friends than women now. I don't see the backstabbing, gossiping, drama with men that I do women.
I try very hard not to be roped into the "catty" side. Hopefully, and I believe, I am doing a good job at it.
To answer, I think a majority of women can be/are catty, but thats not saying ALL women.
This came up on the "Eating Our Young" thread Marla. . . .
I liked PeachPie's essay . . . but I think a woman can go too far in that direction and just be rude at work . . .like House. I think he is an orifice and there is no excuse for treating people like that. However, I do watch the show.
Some men gossip . . . .. they just hide it better. And they can be mean about it too.
I hate generalizations - having said that I will say that my 18 year old daughter's senior class had a fair share of "mean girls" and in fact at graduation, the valedictorian's speech was about the salutorian and how much they hate each other.
I am of the opinion that nurses in general do not eat their young and I hate that saying. I also don't think women in general are catty.
steph
I like peach pies essay.
I have mostly worked with men in resource based industries and found that yes they do gossip too, but that it was quite easy to "have it out" with them, say what you think, disagree, argue your case (respectfully) etc.. face to face and then move on - like water off a ducks back (whether an agreement is reached or not).
I find working with women more tricky in that respect, there tends to be more reactivity I think. Perhaps some of this is related to poor work environment? Level of professional behaviour expected? not sure. I like the straight forward approach myself. I saw a mix of professional and non professional behaviour in my clinicals in the female dominated field of nursing.
Interesting topic.
I've found that any where there is a large number of women, the claws seem to come out. I try very hard to check myself when I among a group of women. I do a lot of self talk "gee do I really need to point out her polish is chipped and her hair is ugly?" Even if I think it I won't say it, I try to stay positive. Women can be BRUTAL, I try really hard not to be one of them or feed into any ugliness that may arise.
Now if it's just me and my BFF we are catty as hell with each other:clown: We don't treat people badly, but when we're together we just let it all hang out.
Women tend to reveal more details of their personal lives to each other than men do.That gives women plenty of ammunition to be catty with.
Women may complain about being gossiped about when they gave all the information to the wrong people.
This is so VERY true. At work, its drives the other nurses nuts that they don't know a lot about me. The ones that I have come to trust and that do know something about me, are always approached by those that want to be in the know.
I was so happy when a male nurse was hired, when he's working, that gets broken up a little. I also agree a lot with the easy. Cliques are formed, and when you aren't apart.... TROUBLE. This can happen in a few ways. If you want to be in the clique and they don't like it, its a classic recipe for drama. If you aren't in the clique and have the nerve not to care.. drama can be created for you... But there are happy mediums... learn to fly above and below the radar.
if you mean by being catty:protective as a mother cat of her kittens;
strong to weather life's mishaps;
able to teach her kits how to survive in the world;
teaching to be clean;
able to climb to new heights;
teaching how to fix your own meal, share it, and clean up afterwards;
teach the equivalent of putting the seat down;
teach how to share, that there's usually always room for one more in the heap;
that every day needs some down time for a stretch and a purr session;
play time is valuable;
gardening is a great stress-reducer;
respect for your elders;
then being catty isn't so bad, eh?
i really like your definition!
Regardless of whether or not females are catty, let's all do our part by raising and mentoring the next generations (males and females!) to be above such behavior. I have pointed out behavior to some people, and I have tried my hardest to be a good role model for my siblings. Remember, this is learned behavior and can be unlearned.
Yea I was just thinking the same thing- I know my mom never taught me to be like that. & I have two daughters who are not like that. I have lots of friends who are women- and we are not like that at work or with each other. So maybe it is just the people you are hanging out with. I choose not to be friends with people who act in hurtful ways- and at work I choose not to be friends with hardly anyone. I have been in the same position for 12 years and I have 14 staff that I supervise- you should hear the crap they say- but I don't- seriously I ignore it-I will tell my staff point blank- I don't want to know- can you handle it yourself- then I don't want to know- move on- it's a job- don't make the mistake of thinking that people at work are your friends and you will be fine.

The men I work with are just as catty as the women.
