Hi everyone! I'm currently in school to finshed my RN. i will finish this summer. In the mean time, I'm and LPN and I work in one of the top rated hospitals in the country. 'been working for 3 yrs, and by the time I finish my RN I will have 4 yrs experience under my belt as an LPN. My unit specializes in gyn/uro with an addition to postpardem mothers with high risk infants, and orthopedics. I really want to travel nurse in LA and I wondered what companies should I look at, and would I stand a chance at getting a decent assignment with my experience? Also what should I expect as a an RN? Thanks!

Even if you are employed by a doctor, via his/her office in private practice, there are a lot of doctors that will not pay a nurse properly, sometimes its better to be employed by a medical facility.

I know this might sound crazy, but I think a lot of a doctor's attitude hinges on just what kind of doctor; ie a cardiologist, or brain surgeon, or vascular surgeon-I don't know about anybody else, but in my neck of the woods, these guys can be bad news and quite vicious. I remember working in one hospital where a nurse wanted to sue a vascular surgeon that decided it would be a good idea to put his hands on her during a surgery when she couldn't get a hold of a certain piece of equipment. Now I know this is a very extreme example, but I look at the job boards, certain areas have a very hard time hiring and keeping nurse due to very, er interesting MDs. Anyone else experience this?

I feel this is very dangerous, and I would also like to add that I've had residents admit that if OSHA and Joint Commission had correct records on how many hours residents actually work.... oh wee. I don't know how true this is, but it makes me wonder when several people have commented on it.

I love this too! There are doctors that will collect a group of nurses to teach right along with their residents... I think this is very nice and thoughtful.

I asked my dad about yelled at by doctors, he's a nurse as well, and he blatantly said that MDs are less likely to lose their mind when dealing with a male nurse. I've noticed there is a lot of truth to this statement.

Now this is always something that has mystified me, the patient is the one that hires the doctor, ergo the doctor shouldn't intimidate the patient. I also don't think patients feel empowered to dismiss a doctor if the relationship between patient and doctor is not working for them.

i don't think doctors realize how true this is, nursing alone has concepts that a lot of people don't understand.

Better yet, doctors that want you to take a verbal order, while they are standing right next to you. I just calmly hand them the chart and walk away. That bull crap about being too busy to write an order irks me beyond belief. Doctors need to learn that nurses are not their personal servants.

Huge egos, lack of humility, bad bedside manner, the GOD complex, condescending behavior, laziness, not putting charts back to their rightful place, believing the only people in the world worth respect outside of their families are other doctors, NOT WASHING THEIR HANDS before going to see patients, getting upset when being corrected by nurses, not answering pages, maybe I should stop, I getting upset. All I'm saying is that nurses are people too, and if it hadn't been for nurses during the Crimean war, MDs wouldn't be anywhere near where they are today. Treat the nurses with respect, and they will break their neck to do exactly what you need for your patients... why because they have a doctors willing to work with them instead of against them.

Trust me, you don't want to know... All i can tell you is, if you walk into a patient's room after they go to the restroom, and you smell something that makes you want to hurl all the way into next week, then it is safe to suspect your patient has cdiff. If you have a stuffy nose, this will open it right up! Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I've noticed patient's that usually get cdiff are patients that are on a lot of antibiotics.

Please please please, don't feel like you shouldn't be empowered to do something about a potentially bad situation just because you are new. If you feel that doing something to help out that patient is the right thing to do, then do it.

Oh man, that sucks! I bet that poor patient thought about that comment the entire time that nurse was taking care of her. I really hurt for that patient. Perhaps that nurse should consider a transfer to another unit or another part of the field, if she is so obviously burnt out where she is. That comment was just ridiculous. Are you going to follow up with the patient?
