President Biden thread

Published

Wow.  No one has started such a thread yet?

After promising that most K-8 students would be in schools in the first 100 days,  apparently Joe is afraid to lead on this and has drastically scaled back that goal.

Instead, we're shooting for about half to go to school at least one day a week,  by the end of April.

Well I guess I missed the plan to fix the current border crisis brought on solely by Biden: continue to blame Trump for everything even though he is no longer in office. If Dems are so concerned that they think Trump broke the law then why are they, and allowing others to break the law.

I'm quoting this not to criticize you specifically, Daisy4, but it reflects some of the issues I see going on in the general discussion.

It's difficult to separate "blaming Trump" from what appears to be a point of view which seeks to convey the idea that Biden is doing exactly the same thing Trump did.  "kids in cages, drowned toddlers" etc. To me that's the flip side of the same coin.

To me the whole thing boils down to their respective attitudes toward immigrants, how they employ the President's "bully pulpit".

I think it can be amply demonstrated that there is a dramatic difference there.  Trump said some of the most appalling things about immigrants in general I've literally ever heard anyone say.

His policies flowed from that, or more specifically, the political appointees he installed (which to me includes the many "acting" people who would normally be required to be confirmed by the Senate) did what they thought would please him without him neccessarily ordering it himself.

Finally, I don't think any one President can solve the immigration crisis.  Of all the huge challenges we face as a country, this one is the least amenable to simplification.

As I like to say to my very conservative friend, the last, best chance we had was the McCain-Kennedy bill of 2005. It was a compromise, both were hugely popular with their base supporters, and both sides were willing to take hits from those supporters to get the job done.

Media Bias review:

Overall, we rate FAIR Questionable based on Extreme Right-Wing Bias as it relates to immigration, promotion of propaganda and conspiracies, as well as having connections to documented Hate Groups. ...

History

FAIR was founded in 1979 by the ophthalmologist John Tanton, former historian of labor movements and director of the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions Otis L. Graham, Jr. and Sidney Swensrud, a former chairman of Gulf Oil. John Tanton is the founder of or involved in the creation of several Anti-Immigration groups that include Numbers USA and the Center for Immigration Studies, which is collectively known as the John Tanton Network. John Tanton believes maintaining an American culture requires “a European-American majority,” and according to the Southern Poverty Law Center he is a prominent figure in the white-nationalist movement.  ...

How Do We Know FAIR is a Hate Group?

Quote

...First, a quick factual correction. FAIR doesn’t “just” research “the facts” about immigration policy. It is a lobbying organization. This is no secret. On its own website, under “Our Objectives,” FAIR said it seeks “to influence public policy directly by lobbying (to the extent permitted by our tax status) and by protecting the citizens' rights in the courts.” Its “mission,” in part, is to “advocate immigration policies that will best serve American environmental, societal, and economic interests today and into the future.”...

Sometimes FAIR’s “facts” are true. More often, they’re debatable, culled as they are from dubious sources like FAIR’s sister organization, the Center for Immigration Studies.

The bottom line is, FAIR doesn’t peddle facts; it peddles hate. It's lobbying and legal efforts – such as the campaign that led to Arizona’s SB 1070 and Alabama’s HB 56 – are based on fomenting fear, on exploiting racial tensions and economic anxieties to convince people that they had better not let any more “aliens” into their country.

True, FAIR is not a credible source on immigration or anything related to stated American values because it is a far-right hate group.  Sadly, far-right so-called media outlets are peddling their garbage and the garbage of other hate groups because Trump supporters continue to align themselves with groups that agree with their hateful racist worldview.

Trump supporters also align themselves with the false reality that maybe Trump (the leader of white supremacy, at this time) and white supremacy are not so bad because Democrats, Independents, and Biden Republicans support of democracy and a diverse country is worse, which is not true.   This is why we can only continue to be vigilant and to point out their nonsense when given the opportunity.  So, thank you, NRSKarenRN! ?

For another view of immigration ---

President George W. Bush was a staunch Republican; turned to painting post presidency, and has become quite a prolific artist.    He's lent his voice to supporting immigrants by painting them,  both unknown and famous.

View his collection of 43 immigrants complied into a book: 'Out Of Many, One Portraits of America's Immigrants" .  He also has an exhibit of the works at his presidential museum - the George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

I caught part of his interview with Nora O'Donnell , liked his  portrait of Chobani yogurt founder Hamdi Ulukaya,  guess its because  I'm a  black cherry Chobani addict.   Texas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, who came to Dallas from Germany to play in the NBA in 1998  also graces the cover.image.pngAfter all "One image = a thousand words".

Thank you for posting that link!

I didn't care much for his politics but 43 was always a likeable guy.

It doesnt seem you are ever able to formulate a reply to one of my comments without making it personal.

Beerman, if your next door neighbor has repeatedly lied to you, tried to swindle you, started rumors about you, disrespected your wife, daughter and mother, cheated on his wife several times and instigated his friends to attack and hurt the gay black and Hispanic couple across the street and then roped into his actions some more neighbors on the street to further create more chaos, do you invite him over for a barbecue and the other neighbors who were suckered by him into beating up the gay couple? Especially when they will not see that they are wrong or even attempt to acknowledge the feelings their behaviors have engendered.

I don't know how others feel, but myself and the people I associate with, will not trust this person enough to even have a conversation with him. He's a severely compromised person and everyone who condones and support his actions are equally compromised. My evidence is the Asians and black people, the Covid-19 fatalities, the bankruptcies and swindles and the continued efforts to grift. How many law suits over the years or accusations by women will convince you to even acknowledge that their might be a problem?

Does the fact that he not only endangered himself but has brought the spotlight into his own family's lives? Do you really think that Ivanka and Jared or his sons etc will be immune from prosecution? How many other people in his cabinet and other appointments are in dire legal trouble because of being in his circle?

Try and reduce America's politics to your own neighborhood and family, assigning characters to people you know and that will tell you who you are! In your own family there are divisions like in everyone's, explore the mechanics.

I really do miss those days when both sides were willing to take hits and get the job done.  We've instead moved to an era of majority rules and stepping across party lines is seen as being a traitor and can damage a career.  I saw that unfold here in Florida when our Republican governor decided to take some of the Obama stimulus package for ailing economy at the times.  Billions of dollars.  Republicans ran him out of office.  He later become so disillusioned he switched parties and is now in congress representing my district as a Democrat.

I didn't realize that we never had a border problem before Biden!  Daisy4RN, what would you do to "solve" this seemingly unsolvable problem?  Multiple countries in Europe are stymied by the same problem.  Complaining is so easy.  Policy is so difficult.

Biden has a huge challenge in the rollout as the number of people being vaccinated is on the decline.  The number of people that either know they will not take it or are hesitant is huge.
