Starting school at older age! :(

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just turned 25 Monday and just registered for classes a couple days ago. As I was talking to my counselor I realized that by the time I finish my associates degree I'll be about 28. So many prereqs I have to take. Im starting out at the lowest level Math that I can't even tall until spring semester. This is just really bothering and stressing my out thinking about it. If I do decide to get my BSN ill be about 30 smh! Anyone else thats a little older starting school feel this way? What do you do to reassure yourself? Im feeling down in the dumps.

30 isn't even close to old.

I'm a nursing instructor and have had several students in their 30s and 40s. I was 28 when I became a nurse.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

I was 40 when I became a nurse. You're still a young 'un.

Specializes in Clinical Research, Outpt Women's Health.

I started my post GED prerequisites at your age. I have been a nurse now for 25 years. Worked out very well.

I just graduated nursing school, I'm 28. I start an RN to BSN program in the fall, I will be 29 when I graduate. Over half the people in my ADN program were over 30.

Unlike other professions, nursing attracts a large share of students who are nontraditional with respect to age and life's circumstances. Many of us were 'older' than the traditional undergrad age of 18 to 23. Many of us were the first generations of our families to complete a college education.

Personally, I was 25 when I obtained my LPN/LVN license, 29 when I earned my associate degree and RN license, and 34 at the time I received my BSN degree. I will be 36/37 when I earn the MSN degree.

I highly doubt you'll be graduating nursing school with large number of fresh-faced 18 to 23-year-old schoolmates.

Wow you're old!

Kidding. I was 37 when I finished my BSN, which took me 5 years because I had a year of pre-requisites. You have ample time, OP.

I'll be 47 by the time my Masters is complete. Many students are in the same age range because they've had other careers.

I'll graduate shortly after my 40th birthday. I don't feel bad about it - why would I? The older I get, the better I get.

Specializes in Acute Care, Rehab, Palliative.

25 is old? Just shoot me now. I was 38. The oldest in my class was 52. I precepted a student that was 59.

I started nursing school when I was 23. Found out I was pregnant my first semester. I kept going. I worked full time and school part time until that baby dropped. Then I switched, went to school full time and worked part time. It took me 6 dang years but I'm 28 now and I'll be 29 when I graduate this fall semester. I have a 3.8 GPA and I bust my but to get the grades I have. I go to a community college and will have my ASN. I plan to attend my local university for the RN-BSN starting next year and I can either finish in 1 year or go part time for 1 and a half years. Seeing that I been a snail this whole time, I will likely take the long route. Then after 2 more years working as an RN... I plan to go back for MS-FNP so I take it I'll be 38 when I reach my goal. I love it... I am embracing every moment. I love learning and I could never get tired of it. Too old is only old when you say it's old... 28 is a great age girl. As you grow, you become wiser. I don't know about anyone else but I'm 28 years young and I'm looking forward to growing up :)

Specializes in Trauma, Teaching.

You'll eventually be 28 anyway, so you may as well get a degree on the way there.

I've had several students in their 60's, and one was 72. Yes, seventytwo, accepted in the program, and graduated. With a nursing degree.

Specializes in Psychiatric, Med-Surg.

Healthcare is my second career. I worked in Accounting until I was 29. I'm 34 now and starting my nursing core curriculum next month. Yeah, I feel like I got a late start. Especially when I see these 20-something nurses. I even feel a little jealous that I didn't have the opportunity for schooling until later in life. But hey, it is what it is. Not much I can do but keep going, and know that I'll be working until I'm pretty old.
