Has anyone gotten into nursing school with a low gpa?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I really goofed in school when I first started out and the community college here wont let students retake classes. So I have a couple of c's in my prereq's for nursing school. I was just wondering if somone knew of anyone that got in a nursing program at a community college with a gpa of 3.0 or below. Right now I have a 3.0 just in case you wanted to know. Thanks

This post is great. I'm in the same boat but I'm trying to remain positive. It;s sad that your past can come back to haunt u , never thought my old Bachelors grade would bite me and I'd never thought that I would one day want to become a nurse. All you can do is keep applying and hopefully a program will acceopt you. If you are truly doing your research you will find a program that has no gp requirement or that focus on your current pre reqs. They do exist. Just do some research.

This happened to me at my school you can not retake a class unless you got a D or and F I got a C 20 years ago in Enlgish 101 my first class out of high school. Heck I would still get a C english is not my subject at all LOL. However after actually quitting school for a semester and having a hissy fit, my transcripts were reviewed and come to find out they won't let you repeat it but they will take a course work from a higher level, I took many other levels of English and they took my A in 102 as my pre req for the nursing program. Not really an option for the sciences but if some of your lower grades are in a Math or English that could be an option.

My school is similiar, you can only get a minimum of a c in the introductory courses and can repeate only 1 class once to meet the 2.5 gpa..my mistake was trying to take on to much at once now i gotta retake math..and my A&P grade isnt all that appealing..i think i'll still ask to see if they will accept A&P 2 instead of A&P 1 for my introductory science course..if not i'll repeat that course and take a higher math. seems like there may be hope for me yet.....Thanks 4 the advice...

You said as far as science classes go thats not really an option..is that what you where told or speculation?

I'm a second semester ADN student. The CC that I go to is really competitive for GPA and NET requirements. Only 60 (day/night) slots for the program, total. GPA is a BIG deal here for admission. They pretty well say up-front that if you can't generate good grades in the pre-req.s, you can't pass the ADN program. They use GPA to weed out what they consider weaker students. We lost 7 students (day) the first semester r/t grades. I have found most of the instructors to be very approachable, you might make an appointment and ask for their advice. Please, please don't let this discourage you from pursuing your dreams, but the program is no cake walk either. You need a plan

To give a 'quick' background:

I have my AD in Medical Assisting..I was shy 3 pre-reqs (Intro to Sociology, Human Development and a Humanities). Unfortunately the college made me retake Bio, A&P and Micro saying I didn't have the appropriate lab. Not a problem 'I thought' until this semester with A&P. I am struggling to stay afloat and am really questioning if I am going to pull the final exam off on Tuesday morning--

Anyways, I work in a Dr's office, and my doctor asks me frequently how my classes are going and if I need any help etc--I told her I was struggling in A&P and made the comment that if I get a C it may be a miracle. My Dr asked me: "What is the title of the person that graduated last in their class?" Of course I had no idea, and when I told her I had no idea, she replied, "A MD" and reminded me that as long as I do my best and know that I am doing the best that I possibly can in the end I will be fine.

Just wanted to share that with you all.

for my school its not an option for the sciences because they are so specific ap 102 and micro there isn't anything higher i could take to replace it (at my school). Chemistry is needed but not a pre req if it were you have other options of higher chem classes to take. But like everything check with your individual school they all vary so much!

I got accepted into the program with exactly a 3.0 GPA so I'm sure you can find somewhere to get in. At my school the only thing you cant retake if you are a nursing majorer is a science more than once. Which I had to do myself and I still was able to get in.

Oops wrong response in wrong post haha.

Congratualtions on your acomplishments. You will give a lot of people hope here.

The constant pressure of "I've got to get an A in this class" gets old......

tell me about it, it's also VERY depressing when your gpa is low

Our school admits on a point system with no waiting lists. You add your GPA + points for completing support courses + Hesi entrance exam grade points after 75. That being said GPA is a smaller portion of the points system than the Hesi entrance so you could make up the difference by doing extremely well on the test.

what's the name of your school? and what is a hsei test?

People, it would be helpful if you stated what school you got accepted into: CC, State College/University, Private School, or Commercial Trade School.

Otherwise your posts have no relevance AT ALL!! :roll

It is definitely possible to get into NS with a 3.0

I had a 3.3 when I was accepted.

I also have a friend who was accepted the semester before me and she had a 3.0 right on the dot!

Don't let other people scare you. It might be a little more difficult, but you can get into NS with a B average. Look at all of your options; community college, public 4 yr college, private school, LPN programs, and diploma programs.

BTW, I go to Rhode Island College: www.ric.edu
