  1. American auto manufacturers should go bankrupt. Build products worthy of my money and trust and I will quit buying Nissan, and Toyota cars and trucks. Real simple. Keep getting hair in my burger and I stop eating there. You deserve to fail because you built a bad burger. Build a crappy car, same thing. Pay seventy dollars an hour to someone to turn a screw. Good Lord. How much do you guys make an hour, and they expect to pay the union guy that sweeps the floor more than some RNs make. What could be the problem?
  2. You had better slap a pretty smile on your face when you go to the bedside because this is the reality of the situation. Avatar scores are based on your pt's perception of your performance. Items they deem important, such as how prompt you are to answer their call bells and get their spouses a blanket, etc. They will remember a joke or a simple gesture long after they are gone. Never mind you checking their meds carefully or confirming orders. They don't see, nor do they understand that. So in reality they will remember the techs longer than you because the tech bathed them and changed their sheets. Now here comes the rant. Staffing = positive scores. Staffing = pt safety. Cut staffing and lower the approval scores and pt safety. How does this relate to the original post? Nurses need to be viewed as the point where the rubber meets the road. The last line of defense between the system and the pt. The consumet professional, educated and versed in direct pt care. If you are hearing the theme from Superman, no problem. Half nice guy and half hardass. As long as we hold the discussion about who cares more, you or me? This profession. Substitute "calling" if you need to. Will NOT be elevated to the level of respect that it deserves. If I have to chose the surgeon working on my daughter's brain and it comes down to an insensitive, selfish, obnoxious, jackass that finished first in his or her class vs. a caring, empathetic, lovable, warm, hugable, barely passing med school surgeon. Give me the jackass every time. Because here is the test. If your auto mechanic was really sorry that he never fixed your car right, I mean really sorry. Really sincerely sorry that he didn't get it right. How many times would you let him work on your car? This profession is not about who cares the most. This profession is about performance.
  3. As long as this arguement exits, nursing wages will not rise to the level that they should. Being a competent professional requires more than feeling someone's pain. I never asked my dentist how they really felt about me. If they really like and care about me. I never asked my MD if if he feels my pain. I pay these providers for their professional services. And, yes I am an RN. Do I really deep down like all of my pts. No. I get them all. The abusive husbands, druggies, criminals. You name it. I treat them all with dignity and respect. Not because I feel their pain, but because I have a standard that I hold myself to. I also work for a paycheck. And honestly, nursing really is not the killer money that you make it out to be. And I'm a second generation nurse. Second career.
  4. How does your comment pertain to the OP's question?
  5. Overriding is the process of obtaining medications not on the pt profile that is stored in the pyxis. Ie, doc comes to floor and orders stat Ducolax for nopoopoo. If allowed, pyxis can be overided to obtain meds not set up by phamacy, yet.
  6. Take an alcohol prep and put it in front of you fingers with your fingers proximal to the insertion site. Run the prep pad along the tubing in front of your fingers, while your non-dominant hand stabilises the tube to prevent pulling against the stiches. The alcohol lubricates the tube and allows your fingers to strip the tubing. common practice on our floor.
  7. So you are saying that you should always have interest to pay to a lender because you gain what....... So interest on a loan is an asset? Are we going to have the discussion about how you can write off interest on a home but it's a good thing because you keep the government from getting as much in taxes, but you actually have less money left, and that's a good thing because...............Next someone will say that you need debt to get debt and that is good. Not true, you can finance a home without debt, called manual underwritting. I didn't say anything anything about the reason for someone using credit cards. I said that the fast food industry has you figured out. The card holder spents more foolishly. You need to look at a amortization schedule. Then you will realise where all your money is going. Now for those of you accusing me of preaching down to the downtrodden masses. Did you really read my post? Seems some are weak readers or try to read between the lines or see things through their own filters. At the end I wished that you became rich and then did great things with your money. Hey, even if you want to stuff your matress with the money you would still be rich. For those of you studying economics at a university, you are probably taking advice from a broke professor. Not all practical information comes from a text book. For those of you that talk about how mommy and daddy are sending their brats through school, more power to them. At least my taxes aren't funding them or paying for defaulted student loans. Hopefully you will have saved enough money to put your kids through school without them going into 100K worth of debt. I know personal responsibility is seldom a popular topic. Kind of like delayed gratification. My kids threw a tantrum once about "they wanted it and they wanted it now. "
  8. There is NO such thing as GOOD debt. You can claim that people that choose to not finance their education are being snobs. I consider that people that refuse to live beyond their means, pay interest to banks, and credit cards are chosing to be responsible with their money. Do you know why fast food places take credit cards now? Do you think most people have to finance their hamburger? NO. They do it because people spend up to 20% more when they use credit cards to purchase. That's why I only use debit cards and cash. I want the emotional attachment to my money being wasted. Go ahead and spend the rest of your lives financing cars, furniture, carpet, houses, Christmas, school clothes, whatever. Because that's what normal broke people do. You guys spend at least two years trying to learn to critically think and you throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to money. Well, you say, it's better to borrow money to spend on education than buying crack or shoes or purses. It's really better to act like your grandma and spend only the money you have. The sign of maturity is when you delay gratification by saving and planning for what you want and need. You need to throw out the phrase: " I'll finance this or borrow for that because I deserve it and besides Nurse Lucy already has a bigger house, car, newer purse, etc." Ok, enough of the rant. Here's the whole motivation of NOT borrowing and financing everything. The biggest wealth building tool that you have is your wages. If you live within your means, pay cash for good, reliable used cars, purchase a reasonable house with a big down payment and fixed interest on fifteen years, you live like no one else. Just think of the changes you can make in your children's lives when you are a millionare. You can change your family tree. You can build a church, help build a hospital, help cure cancer, drill water wells in Africa. So laugh at my simple ways. I'm debt free. I tithe to help with my church, my wife sends money to St. Judes, I will help with my nephew's college, my wife can help a family member after back surgery. Yes, I'm weird. Normal is dead broke and one paycheck away from homelessness.
  9. You might check with your program to see if Kaplan will substitute for a failed second HESI. It did at our school.
  10. You might start by lowering your expectations of what you consider acceptable for NS. First, there are a LOT of smart people in your class. It's not like A&P, Micro, etc. It's hard. I had a 4.0 prior to NS and made one A prior to completion. Number one in my class with one A. All B's other than that. Not a dumb person in my class. You will look back at this post when you are through and realise that what I am telling you is the truth. If you have not gone through the program, you do not believe what the graduates tell you because you think that they exagerate or want you to freak out or whatever. This is as blunt and truthful as I can muster. Nursing school is really, really hard. You should focus on learning and not on making A's. You will very rarely see A grades.
  11. Sounds like Dave Ramsey. I'm better than I deserve as well, went through NS with no debt, and continue to be that way. I'm weird, I owe no one for anything. Normal is dead broke, and one pay check away from homeless.
  12. We have an admission specialist that starts IVs and does the pre-op and admission forms, If, she is on our floor at the time. Otherwise, we do everything.
  13. We had VCE for our pediatric clinical rotation. I thought it would be like you were really taking care of multiple pts and learning to prioritize care, but they really blow. We had that and a workbook that had to be done, busy work in my opinion.
  14. So, what you are saying when you state that the public has no idea what nurses do, so they should at least have a BSN to practice? And, since you have less clinical experience during you can quickly become better once you have worked as a nurse. Let's face something about education. The real world and school are two different things, regardless of the degree path. On the job training is required for any job, including nursing. As far as the arguement that BSN would make people recognise that nurses are really all that and a bag of potato chips, I disagree. The number one problem with the image of nurses is the image that nursing has self-promoted for years. We are just here to care. We do only because we feel the need to care. If nurses are concerned about making a living we scorn them, because they should just be here to care. I had a nusing administrator publically attempt to ridicule me during a recruiting dinner by telling me that they only wanted nurses that were there to care for pts, and it was wrong for me to ask about wages and benefits. Sorry, nursing will feed my family and pay my bills. if you want to be respected as a professional, change this image, don't be so concerned about the amount of time you spend in scholl.
  15. I know it's not what you had, but why not Airway Clearance Ineffective?
