Does your school still say the Pledge of Allegiance? I've seen posts around facebook lately along the lines of "bring the pledge back into school" or "Do you remember when?" with pictures of kids facing the flag. And it got me to wondering how many schools still did this, if it was a regional thing, private/public thing, ect.
We are a public school and still have the pledge broadcast every morning at the start of the day. Every kid (and staff) stand, face the flag and recite together. Obviously from my name, you can gather I'm in the midwest.
What do you do?
That's good, but I feel lots of people fight and have fought for this country, including non citizens.
You bet!! We would have lost WW2 if not for the women working at home to churn out tanks and guns and ammo and uniforms and all the necessities of war; untold others working for the same effort - all for freedom and all for the US of A. All the more reason to pause, just briefly, utter a few words of thanks and allegiance to those who gave so much. And no, I'm not a veteran, just an OldDude who is thankful for the sacrifice others made on my behalf.
We do pledge, National Anthem and moment of silence. One of our principals had veterans come to tell how they fought to give us freedom, no one will abstain after that presentation.
How ironic...to tell kids (or make them feel) they can't choose to abstain from reciting the Pledge because veterans fought for their freedom. Suppose saying the Pledge of Allegiance conflicts with a student's belief's in God. Is that student supposed to violate his/her religious beliefs and recite the Pledge? I hope things have gotten better than school I was in school and was physically and emotionally abused because I didn't say the Pledge or stand for the national anthem.

I think it is. I don't think we have a "Pledge police" here on LI.

I think you may be reading a bit too much in that. We don't shame anyone into reciting. The attitude after the vet spoke is one you may have felt if you have ever visited the USS Arizona Monument or a concentration camp, a deep appreciation for what they went through. The decision comes from within each student, not external manipulation. I don't believe the Pledge is something that should be compulsory.
