Does your school still say the Pledge of Allegiance? I've seen posts around facebook lately along the lines of "bring the pledge back into school" or "Do you remember when?" with pictures of kids facing the flag. And it got me to wondering how many schools still did this, if it was a regional thing, private/public thing, ect.
We are a public school and still have the pledge broadcast every morning at the start of the day. Every kid (and staff) stand, face the flag and recite together. Obviously from my name, you can gather I'm in the midwest.
What do you do?
My current school does not do the pledge by my last District only 1 out of the 2 schools did the pledge. And by the way, all Gods belong in public schools. They're public schools. Freedom of religion and all that. The pledge has the right to be said in US schools and people have the right to refuse to say it.
Or no gods, if that's the kid's cup of tea.
I went to the Holocaust museum recently. Sobering. We are taught this in school, but it is very graphic to see it at the museum. The kids not from this country that were on the trip had a particularly hard time with the museum. They are not taught about the Holocaust in every country, and this was their first experience with it.
I went on a social studies trip with my #4's fifth grade class to NY and went to the Holocaust museum; he was wide eyed and very quiet. I left outta there quite nauseous and it took me a while to recover. But this may be getting off topic.

Have been to a concentration camp and Pearl Harbor. Not a word was spoken either place, almost Holy in atmosphere. An experience everyone should have.

I have been to Nuremberg Hitler Youth camp, 2 concentration camps, the Holocaust Museum in DC, USS Arizona. I went to Ground Zero a few times when it was still Ground Zero, haven't been since the Freedom Tower went up. (I just can't. I miss the Towers.)
I guess I'm just morbid. It really puts things in perspective.

Not morbid. It just grounds us in the reality of the sacrifices made by others for us. While in NY we went to the the 9/11 Memorial. My heart told me I had to go but I didn't want to. I psyched up myself to be a big boy and not cry but it didn't work. I think the kids really "got" that one.
We used to do this:
Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers FoundationStephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation
Heartbreaking. Some NYFD would run the whole thing in full FD gear to honor Mr. Siller. When we came out of the tunnel, there were NYFD lined up in full dress uniform, holding up the picture of one of the deceased FD members. The first time I ran it, I almost lost it. My kids did it a couple of times, too, and were very moved.
Waaaaaaaay, OT. Sorry denise.

I went to a torture exhibit. It was put on by an organization of people who have experienced torture around the world. It was amazing how many of the devices were specifically for women. I needed some kitten videos after that.

related story...
I took my kids to Medieval Times and we did the torture device tour. My oldest daughter (9 at the time) was super interested in all of it.
9: Mom!! What's this? What does this one do?? How does this one kill someone??
Me: *(calmly explain the various forms of torture and mutilation)*
...approaching the chastity belt
9: What's this one do?
Me: That... is to make sure that the girls don't get a boyfriend.
Group of 7-10 people around me start snickering
Me: And I will thank you fine people NOT to elaborate.
