It seems that roughly 50% or more people will fail the first semester in my program. Is this standard? I ask because, although I myself am passing, there are people 100xs smarter then me who are not.
What are the failure rates of your 1st semester classes?
first semester 50 started, one quit in the first week, 3 failed the drug calc and the rest just failed the class(12 in all) second semester everyone passed(we picked up two people that had to retake 2nd semester), third semester, after picking up some LPNs and paramedics(49 all together), lost 2 in the drug calc, 1 due to personal problems 2 due to written work. Tests and written work are scored seperatly, you have to pass each to actually pass the class(70% ave). They are averaged together for the final grade. What a stressful year, but one semester is between me and graduation....
We lost one in the first semester but picked up about 3 or 4 students at the beginning of the second. This last semester I know we had two drop due to grades but may be more, just haven't heard yet. Considering is a fairly large class (24+) I think we are doing pretty good at retention. Would like to see everybody else make it to the end, though statistics probably work against that.
Wow. We started with 62 and ended with 62. I'd be shocked if we lost anyone along the way to graduation, to be honest. I don't know that our program ever has asked someone to leave due to academics more than once or twice.
(Hooray for competitive ABSN programs with tight-knit student communities and supportive faculty! It makes all the difference in the world... NS has been the best experience of my life!)
I just completed my first semester, and we didn't lose too many people. A couple of people left due to personal issues. Pharmacology was the big class that supposedly weeded people out this semester, and I know that a few people (less than 5, probably, in a class of over 30) didn't pass. Overall though, we've lost way less students than I lot of other programs I've heard about. We're though.

In my area, we have 3 RN programs. 1 admits by competitive admissions, admits 30 students/year, and has only had 1 student drop out/fail out in 4 years. Typically, the lowest GPA admitted each year is 3.7.
The other two admit by waiting lists with a C- avg or above GPA required to be on the waiting list, and only about 50% of the students that start these programs finish.
