Nursing doesnt define you

Published

It only defines a part of you :p. So what are some things you enjoy in your off time? Ive met so many special personalities here on allnurses. Some fiesty nurses, some sweet nurses, as well as some great student nurses. Ive been in nursing (officially since 2003) and it's a special part of my life, but one other thing that Im known for is my goofiness (which you may not see on this page) LoL! Anyhow, I like to write, do things with my husband and kids (amusement parks are my fav because I love rollercoasters!), I love museums, Im always trying new recipes, history is my fav subject, Im crazy emotional - I guess I could go on forever because Im also VERY TALKATIVE. :D Enough about me, what about you guys? What other things make you, you? :)

This is a wonderful thread! Way to keep perspective...or "keep it real";)

I like to read (especially outside on a warm sunny day), enjoy the small things with my husband who is my best friend, play games (video, board, card, etc), have long talks with very old friends, sit still and/or nap, and on the rare occasion that I'm not in the city, I love to watch a clear night sky, or sit on soft mossy earth under an old growth tree in a large, uninhabited deciduous forest. I also love to drink a beer or two, possibly during any or all of the above activities. :)

Much like one nurse in this thread, I have this quarter and one summer quarter before I finish my BSN but after that date, I'll be pursuing the following:

- salsa dance classes

- skeet shooting

- french class

I have no kids, no boyfriend and my friends are now married so I have way too much time on my hands bwahahahaha

I am jealous. No peace!

Specializes in EDUCATION;HOMECARE;MATERNAL-CHILD; PSYCH.

i am a born-again christian, a mother, a friend, a wife, a church member, a daughter, a neighbor, a teacher, a doctorate student, a cousin, an aunt, godmother, sister, a writer, an activist, a cat lover, etc, etc

however...

i love to do silly things with my children. i love talking, laughing hysterically at silly things. i love window shopping, walking in the rain, dancing with my daughter and playing video games with my son. i love making people around laugh. i love saturday cartoons while eating pancakes. i love horror and sci-fi movies. i love cuddling my one-year old as he sleeps. i love tickling my children.

however, my main hobby is driving especially trucks. i love big suvs. i love to drive and sing on top of my voice. whenever i am stressed or need a time out, i will get into my car and drive while singing on top of my voice (usually out of tune) - my husband calls it my diva moments!

i love nursing but it does not define me. i think that i am a good nurse because i love me first!

me too, jealous of free time, that is:p

Specializes in Psych/Forensic Psych.

I love reading, watching mindless tv (especially Chelsea Lately, 16 and pregnant, and the Kardashians), and spending time with my family. I'm a psych nurse and take on all of my pts problems sometimes, so I have recently started running and swimming again. That way, I get quiet time to clear my head and also feel more energized.

This is a fun thread!

I love vintage textiles and needlework books, I like to knit lace, but I am really proud of finally being able to knit socks, because it involves 4 skinny double -pointed needles and it took me -f-o-r-e-v-e-r- to get it right! I collect women's magazines, and have at least one from every decade since 1865. When I have the time I love to haunt flea markets and take long meandering drives in the mountains when we lived in Colorado. Ghost towns were a favorite destination.

I inherited a quirky side from my mom, which means I'm not generally afraid to appear silly (outside of work) At 55 years old I am a Twitter addict! My daughter can't believe it! :) I never liked aerobics or the gym but I love ballet and tap. I adore all the old musicals (and TCM). But "Stomp" is great too!!

Canesdukegirl - I wish you had a show sort of like Deadliest Catch- I would love to see what you see out on your boat. My mom lived on the Kitsap Peninsula in WA for 5 years and we picked up the most amazing treasures that washed up on the beach. I cherish the wreaths and other little craft items she made from them.

Kool-aide - my first car was a brown metal-flake finish '67 Cougar with tan leather upholstery -o.m.g. would I kill for that car (no catalytic converter!) !

Dthfytr - do you still wear your tie dyes? I do! I still love those hand tooled leather wallets and belts that were popular then, too. I love to go to the beach - and I am not cutting my long hair just 'cause I'm old now.

As a matter of fact, just before I started nursing school (about a decade ago) I started taking dance classes. Right now I belly dance at events about once a month. I didn't think it would get this far. I just took the classes to have some "free" time and add to my workouts while in college. I was an awful dancer in highschool too. So whoever says it is too late for something it isn't.

Just recently, I won a Dance Off and the prize was a video for my portfolio, it is in the editing process as we speak very excited. :yeah: I have had some time to concentrate on dance because I have been spending the last year unemployed looking for work so you know... couldn't sit around and slump around my as well do something with the dance education. I have taken other genres as well but, then we would be here all day. :uhoh3:

Other than that I love sewing, costuming, reading, baking, hiking, watching movies, traveling, roller derby, being involved in my community, and being a mom.:heartbeat

Mom to three young kids, wife of a murse (male nurse). Since I am job hunting I can't wait to be "defined as a nurse", but for the time being I keep myself busy with projects around the house. I built a chicken coop in our backyard and I am now in the process of converting our front lawn into a raised bed veggie garden. I cook, I knit, I run and I'm always down for a family bbq.

Specializes in Private Practice- wellness center.

I love how so many of you are creative types. (And how so many of us gravitate towards quiet moment opportunities! lol)

I am getting ready to start my 3rd semester of RN school, so right now, nursing does define me more than I would like it to. However, I do have my vices even now. I love cooking, and manage to do it for my little family at least four nights a week. (Hubby cooks at least twice a week...WOOT!) I love trash on TV, and when the fall rolls around again, I will have football on every day/night we can watch it. (Yup, even the high school games that are shown on ESPN2.) I also married a NASCAR freak, and can say that I learned to love it over the last 14 years. (Although I am a HUGE Jimmie Johnson fan, I would like to see someone else win it this year, just NOT Kyle Bush!) I also find myself enjoying Chocovine a little too much!!! :-P

Once I graduate, I plan on going diving again. I miss my friends that live on the reefs. I want to read for pleasure again. I would LOVE to have more than a small herb garden, but gardening in the desert is a real challenge, even when you have a lot of time to devote to it. UGH. I want to learn how to knit more than one continuous row of nothing. (World's skinnies scarves is what I call them. LOL!) I dearly miss scrapbooking, and my Cricket is always calling my name. I can't wait to use it more than once a semester again.

I want to be able to sign my son up for sports again. He'll be five in a couple months and has been BEGGING to go play baseball or soccer again. (He REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wants to play football, but at his age, NO. It's only tackle for 5 year olds here, and that's just too young IMHO.) I miss spending so much time with him, we used to hang out all the time, and boy he does NOT have a problem reminding me after a night I am not home for story time. :D

Most importantly, I want to reconnect with my husband. He works for the railroad, so he is gone away from home a lot. We have it on the books to take a REAL vacation, just the two of us, once I do graduate and get a job. However, we have since learned that Disney is putting in a Cars area in California Adventures, so we may ditch the just the two of us thing and take the boy for a fun week of playing with the Mouse.

To make a short story long- I just want to be able to REALLY cook something, read a trashy novel, SCUBA dive, and see my family more than I get to now. :D

what an interesting thread!

when i am not studying, you can find me in the "man cave" (basement) curled up on the couch watching law & order: svu, ncis, csi, border wars, deadliest catch, anime shows, cartoons, or movies that are in our netflix queue. my husband and i don't watch too much tv, we are always on our netflix. i also love cooking, long walks and working out. i was a taekwondo instructor for 6 years before i left philippines and relocated in the states. if i am not being a house plant, not a life of the party kind of girl, i spend the day with my husband and family (in-laws). my husband and i go to tigers game, go grocery shopping together, stroll at the mall, go for a sushi dinner date once a week, attend horror conventions, and go for a road trip. oh, you can also see me doing what i do best, sleeping!:zzzzz lol, when i am not busy busting my butt off studying.

lsu tigers?

As a student nurse, I still spend a huge amount of my time studying. But when I'm not, I love baking, reading, watching the odd bit of TV, having a good chat with good friends (both nursing and non-nursing ones), singing, dancing, listening to a wide and varied range of music genres, playing piano and searching for Mr Right... of course haha! In a way, nursing does define me a little bit right now, not just because I spend so much time involved with it, but because I'm so passionate about it and feel like I was born to do it! I thank God every day that I was lucky enough to find something that is such a perfect fit for me, and I pray that when I'm qualified I can live up to the ideals of my passion and be a truly great nurse. :)
