No nursing shortage: roll call!

Published

This is a follow-up to the "will the nursing shortage ever end?" post. If there's a glut of new grads and unemployed nurses in your area, post your location. I'll start: Bay Area/NorCal - no jobs here, kids!

There are two main companies that run the majority of hospitals around here. I decided to call the HR recruiters to see if maybe they would talk to me about jobs or help me in some way. The one company has 5 hospitals; I left voicemails with each hospital's recruiter. No return call, not one. The other company has 4 hospitals. They had one main number for HR for all the hospitals. I called that, talked to a very nice woman and found out that of the 10 jobs out of the 4 hospitals that didn't specify experience necessary, they only actually hire new grads for one. One!!!!!!!! One job in 4 hospitals. And she said they have so many applicants for it, they haven't gotten to my application yet. There are 2 nurses on that floor that I know (one I worked with in my LTC place, and one I went to school with who had worked there as a aide), and another nurse who works at the hospital on a different floor that I went to school with who I also went to school with. I mentioned that. They did say I could put them down as references.

Sorry, hope this makes sense. I'm so down and discouraged. :crying2::crying2::crying2::crying2: I was thinking about moving out of the area for a while, but it seems that everyone has the same idea and there aren't many jobs anywhere.

The HR lady for the company with 4 hospitals did say she liked my resume so that's hopefully a good sign. I mean, no one saw it yet and she liked it....Trying to be hopeful lol.

Alabama is a feeder state..... nurse's leave to find jobs as there are so many schools and nurses...this is why pay is poor, working conditions are poor.. and many master level nurses work as staff because they can't get a "better" job..

i hope there is a turnaround for the better soon! BUt here in minnesota,

some jobs , but by NO means a ton!

Ditto to this,

I applied to Legacy's Versant new grad program....I was one of 750. Legacy is the only system to offer new grad programs out of 4 large Hospital systems and a few county hospitals

There are 7 RN programs in the Portland/Vancouver area and a bunch of for profit trade schools for LPN programs.

Took me 8 months to find a job in a SNF

How many new grad jobs were available out of the 750 who applied?

Sounds like fierce competition!

Chicago metro and north: glut of new nurses, unhappy experienced nurses doing the big musical chair game.

Beware of HR, never a straight shot from them. They are forbidden to really tell you anything - it's bad business (LOL). If you are a NG and you have a serious "in" you'll get a job without even trying. This EVEN if you were a complete sorry failure in every aspect of your college experience. It's about who you know, and that person usually is somebody's BFF.

Folks, its Chicago Metro. That is how it's done. We are part of Illinois, the land of corrupt ...well, everything .

onaclearday,

I am too in the land of the corrupt and I call it the Land of Oz but actually up north around Seattle I have a few job leads may relocate and live in a box there LOL cuz rent is steep LOL..just kidding ... kinda.... :D

CALLING ALL NEW GRADS:

If you're in California... you're in luck!! The positions will be in Solano County (which I guess is the Bay Area).

I just saw a post on Sac State's Facebook page by someone who wrote that NorthBay Healthcare will be hiring new grads in the next few months.

ETA: I'm not affiliated with NorthBay. I just saw the post, and wanted to share it with frustrated new grads!

That's good to know, but I'm from the bay area and Solano County is not the considered the bay area. A lot of my friends just graduated and aren't being hired out here.

I graduated with a BS in nursing in May 2010 and unfortunately STILL NO RN JOB (along with about 75% of my nursing graduating class). I am in Georgia and I have filled out over 20+ applications (no exaggeration). No one hires new graduates because of "lack of experience." My fellow classmates have branched out to Texas, North Carolina, and Arizona to find jobs while others (like myself) continue to search for jobs in Georgia with no luck. If there is a nursing shortage can someone please direct me to the location. Don't get me wrong there are several RN positions available AFTER about 2 years of experience under your belt.

I was fortunate enough to get my job back as a certified pharmacy technician at Walgreens (the job I had BEFORE I started nursing school). If I had to rely on my BSN degree and RN license I would still be out of work!!!. :-(

Unfortunately, no nurse shortage in Georgia. :-(

they hired 40, then 6 months later they had another round of hirring, only they increased the GPA requirments to apply still had 500 applicants and only hired 20-30 that time around.

Bumping to keep live.

FYI: Follow this link for a very informative read over in the Nursing News section. Several nurses have now written their representatives regarding this bill which, affects EVERY nurse here in the United States whether currently employed or unemployed. Read it and weep.

Has anyone considered home health. There seems to be a huge shortage of home health nurses at least here in Tucson.

I do think it has been mentioned a few times but at least in my area they do not hire new grads for home health. I do have to report though that I have been hired at a LTC/Rehab and I start on Monday.:yeah: And the schools keep on cranking out the new grads!:clown:

After working agency for awhile. I found that if a New Grad gets a position in a Rehab Hospital in MA, you can pretty much work anywhere after a year. They seem to be getting jobs with no difficulties through this route. If someone from MA wants to message me I can tell them the places. Some have sign on bonuses and pay for training, like ACLS. Just have to be in the know sometimes.
