This is a follow-up to the "will the nursing shortage ever end?" post. If there's a glut of new grads and unemployed nurses in your area, post your location. I'll start: Bay Area/NorCal - no jobs here, kids!
SC-no shortage. I think new grads coming outta school saying, "I'll only work ER, ICU, etc and won't work in the jails, med surg, or a LTC, etc" . These type of people are USUALLY the nurses wo jobs. I decided that I would take whatever came my way. I had three jobs offers in 1.5 wk and have received numerous others since then. I may not have been in my dream job right out-of-the-shoot but just received an offer somewhere that I am excited about now.
I also think new grads don't look outside the box for jobs. They check the major hospitals and forget about your rehab, mental health, home health locations.
Northern Nevada-no shortage of new grads here! Most jobs offered at the hospitals are for per diem, for which they require at least one year experience. Two hospitals did hire substantial numbers of new grads in June, but nothing for a while now. I have applied for more than a dozen positions with just one interview. Still keeping the faith... I know there is something out there for me. I'm willing to accept any unit, any schedule. There are no openings in LTC either.
I said listings in Hawaii at the hospitals, but what sense does it make to have actively listed jobs (mostly posted within the last 30 days) and be on a hiring freeze? Logically one would think they wouldn't post jobs if they weren't going to hire for them. Anyway, google castle medical center and there was probably 10 positions under RN, there were a bunch of different ones under the pali momi site, but they also listed jobs by specialty and by their sister hospitals. I'm not saying they are dying for nurses out here, but just trying to say there are listings for jobs, unlike under the federal hiring website, there were no postings for jobs for RNs, well maybe there was one for Tripler but I cannot remember.https://www.healthcaresource.com/castle/index.cfm?&ijobpostondaysold=&template=dsp_job_list.cfm&cjobattr1=All&ijobrowstart=1&fuseaction=search.jobList&ijobcatid=104 there are 10 postings at castle under RN, scroll down lines 22-32. Hawaii Pacific health system jobs lists them by specialty. you have to search many different ones. Since you have 15 years of experience, you could probably find one easily.
Are you planning a move to NC? I have had friends hired at Onslow Memorial hospital, camp lejeune naval hospital (who will always accept resumes), New hanover regional medical center, pitt county's hospital, pender memorial hospital... Maybe they knew someone, perhaps their school helped with job placement, none the less they are working.
Excuse me for having hope, aka the "student mentality"
You're excused ... I am glad that your friends have found jobs and that you are hopeful; we all should be to a point. In the same breath lets not forget what we're all going through right now. Our best resource is each other. You show me you have passion for what you believe in and will make a good nurse. Good luck on your search in the future.
It seems that many people do not get it when it comes to nursing and many other careers these days. the bottom line is that this planet is saturated with humans that all have very similar dreams. this creates a competitive environment whether you choose nursing, engineering, any earth science... and an arts degree? forget it dont waste your time unless your job is in some way secure.
so what do you have to do when there is competition? compete.. or get left behind. you have got to be smarter, stronger, more skilled, and more certified. you just have to be better. humanity is advancing and more is being demanded of us from employers, accept it or get left behind. the trends are all over... in every career field. ADN? forget it, maybe to start if there is no other option but BSN is the new standard AND IT MUST BE ACCREDITED BY EITHER NLNAC OR CCNE!!! state accred. is only a small first step and not only that but look at track record, its possible for a school to lose accreditation while you are attending leaving you up ____ creek without a paddle. BSN only with no experience or other skills? maybe but dont count on it. going through college doing nothing but studying? too easy, i know women who get their BSN's while working full time and raising families... get that experience any way you can.. be creative, get ACLS and PALS, take EMS classes and ride on ambulances, volunteer, collaborate with professors, you think they dont have connections?!. work yourself into the ground and NEVER STOP. get top grades, never settle for mediocrity or cut your throat for higher education (MSN, DNP....etc.) i am anticipating that a masters will be the only way to differentiate yourself in 40 years.
i could go on and on but these are the times...

I still have three years until I finish my program so hopefully older nurses will retire and newer nurses can fill new positions, as well as more and more baby boomers retiring and needing more medical care. I hope for the sake of nursing that more positions open up (with the economy moving upward as opposed to the downfall it is still in). I'm already looking at grad school if there is no shortage when I graduate. I really love school but NS may change that
I'm also trying to figure out whether if taking PALS and ACLS certifications would be better or make one more marketable when trying to find a job as a new grad. Does it help? I know hospitals usually pay for it, but since they aren't really hiring, I wouldn't expect them to pay... Many list these cert's as a requirement.
I hope every nurse will be able to find a job, especially one they love!
Eventually the bottom will fall out but no one can say definitively that it will happen on x day of x month of x year. Lets hope its sooner rather than 10 years down the line.
It isn't only eastern NC that are hiring new and/or experienced nurses but they are also hiring nurses throughout the entire state. NC consist of the mountains, flat lands, and coast and we need nurses in all of these areas. If you want to move to the mountains, you can find a nursing job around asheville, if you want to live in the flat lands you could find a nursing job around charlotte, winston-salem, greensboro, raleigh, fayetteville, if you want to live in the coast/beach you could find a nursing job around elizabeth city, wilmington, new bern. there are several va hospitals (asheville, durham, charlotte, fayetteville) & major teaching/research hospitals (duke, unc, wake forest, east carolina)..A lot of people move to NC from up north or down south, especially from Florida whether it may be in the mountains or the coast..so there is definately a need of them!!
that is such beautiful country, wish I could be there but have obligations here...hope you get some great nurses from this post.
Washington Puget Sound area.. there are nursing jobs if you are acute care but not many full time and I have found in last few months interviewers are just rude. I think they think they can be because of the recession. I have not seen any new grad job positions posted on job sites or hospital system job sites..
Northern New Jersey/New York Metro area: NO SHORTAGE! Lot's of nursing programs (including a number of BSN programs) and only one or two new grad programs this year - so the competition is very high. A few jobs for experienced RNs, but also a lot of PD listings. Tough for new grads here, but a few of us are getting nibbles and a couple have landed positions (usually due to connections). I have an "UNPAID" internship beginning next month that lasts for 4 months with a job (hopefully) at the end. Still looking at paid positions in the meantime. But, I knew it was going to be a tough market when I went back to get BSN two years ago...so no surprises. Just trying to keep the faith :)

central texas = certainly no shortage!! zillions of new grads here, tons of people leaving careers (like teaching where a ton just got laid off) for "stable less-stressful careers where there will always be plenty of jobs to choose from"
I thought it was tough when i graduated a few years back, it's way harder now to get a job!! the openings you see are for the same units in the same hospitals where the management and/or the coworkers suck and people get all excited and take them only to quit asap when they realize how bad that particular unit is.
sucks. all the nurses drives pay way way down.
