Mispronunciations That Drive You Nuts

Updated:   Published

Car-dee-ya-zem.

It's car-di-zem. Or dil-ti-ya-zem.

Cardiazem isn't a real thing.

Can I get an amen?!

Smoking sensation instead of smoking cessation. I swear, my professor always said sensation and the whole class would just role their eyes.... She had a PhD.

That would FUSTRATE me to no end. Fustrate?

That's so frustrating!

What drives me nuts? People who think it's their god given duty to correct someone when they mispronounce a word. It's rude and they should have been taught better manners by their parents.

Oh, lighten up! We're just having fun here. No one has said that they actually correct anyone.

Wrong-o. Your "manners" are far from universal. I am thankful when someone discreetly corrects me! Know why? I like to be educated, and I welcome the opportunity to correctly pronounce a word in future use. Ego checked at the door.

Failing to enlighten someone as to mispronunciation is not unlike failing to enlighten someone as to a booger hanging from their nose.

Feel free to correct me. I don't want to sound ignorant or uneducated. I would rather you tell me the right way to pronounce a word than let me go on sounding silly. Kind of like walking around with food on my shirt or a stain on my butt ...... PLEASE tell me; don't let me go on looking like a slob.

The grammar mistakes of there, they're, and their along with to,too, and two, along with you, your, and you're in the wrong context.

Accept and except in the wrong context. I accept your invitation , Everyone except Jane is going to the concert.

Those annoy the heck out of me! Two, to, and too, in particular, are my pet peeves- ESPECIALLY coming from college-educated people! Another one that drives me batty- affect vs effect mishaps...

See this one every day- "I don't want to loose my license" "I need to loose weight" Instead of lose!

Ugh! That's another one that irritates me! I have a lot of childhood friends that never graduated HS so I generally give them a free pass (I don't let it bug me too much) but when I see someone ABOVE me on the food chain make those oopsies, it's like nails on a chalkboard! I have to grit my teeth and take a deep breath before moving on.

Methinks Red needs a pet peeve spellings thread.

orientating is a word....

I just looked it up... Apparently, "orientating" is British dialect, "orienting" is American. Either one is acceptable, but orienting is proper grammar in our country. I guess I was wrong! I usually cringe when people say that word, now I will cut them some slack. Lol
