MDC Spring 2012 :)

Published

Hi guys!

I was hoping to get to know some of the people that will be applying to the Spring 12 nursing program.

I've been following the MDC Fall 2011 =) thread and I'm super excited for them, but now I'm even more excited since this time it's finally me who is applying to the nursing program.

So...who else is applying???? :redbeathe

:nurse:

Hi Neyla! Thanks for replying to me, you're the first person to answer any of my questions!!! I applied to F/T Generic and Accelerated. My GPA is a 3.6 and my TEAS score was a 78. Im hoping this is good enough but one can never tell! I heard from an advisor that TEAS scores this application pool were somewhat lower than before. Have you heard anything like that???

dpargas01,

according to what i have read here on the thread, others have also heard that for this applicant pool the scores were lower than for the fall pool. if that is true we (you and i) have a better chance of getting in for spring :yeah:.

however when i turned in my app. the advisor was not thrilled with my scores and said that i to hope for the best, but that she would of felt more secure if i had scored in the 80's(duhh). well all i can do now is pray i get in. but i will say that the days i went to the medical campus to take the exam and the day i was waiting to be seen by an advisor to turn in my app., most of the students scores were in the 60's and 70's. i really hope we get some news soon because if i do not get in i need to take a few more classes to be able to apply at fiu and nova and it is hard to find classes that fit my schedule but i guess mdc does not take that into consideration since they have not been able to advise us before registration opens. but why complain if no one at mdc listens.

Rnati,

Thanks for your post! It was very sweet of you to share your thoughts.

I kind of felt bad after I posted the request for people reading as guest to join because, really who am I to tell people what to do. But I really enjoy reading the thread and would love it if all applicants were to join. That way we would have a better idea of what we can expect for the future and we can help eachother through this waiting period. I am so gald I can share my comments with others who are in the same boat.

Neyla,

Don't feel bad. I'm one of the many whose been browsing through forums (for months) and never really thought to add any incite on the topics at hand. Which now seems a little selfish. I must say that you kinda gave me that little nudge to go ahead and just create an account. So I guess I should be thanking you since I'm now apart of the information giving community lol.

Thanks! lol :coollook:

p funk,

welcome aboard! :yeah:i am glad my comments led you to join (i hope i wasn't to pushy, lol)

but isn't it great to read the thread? i feel we need all the post we can get, so please share you knowledge with all of us.

i love it that we all are inspired by each other and our post.

in addition it relieves the agony of waiting for that letter/e-mail. :D

Thanks Neyla.

And btw, you weren't too pushy at all. I must say it feels pretty good to be able to read the threads and than have something to add to them. Smh I swear, me reading these threads really did kill some of the anxiety that I had built up in me... lol :p

So many new names, glad to see you all and welcome aboard! Feel free to post anything that will help us all to pass the time!

Neyla,

Don't worry, you weren't pushy at all. Just like P_Funk said, it was selfish of us to just read and not contribute to the thread. We were benefiting from reading the thread, so it was only right that we contribute to it. And P_Funk stated it well... you gave us that nudge to start posting...

On an inspirational note, as much as I applied to MDC's nursing program because it was cost-effective and convenient, there is also a feeling out there that the nurses that come out of MDC are of a high quality. I have had several co-workers whose parents or relatives ended up in the hospital over the summer, and when they came into contact with a nurse they were impressed with, they would ask them where they went to school. Time and time again, they found that the nurses they liked came from MDC. So for all of us who are waiting to get in, WHEN we do, we should all be proud. MDC nurses seem to have a good reputation. :)

Very true, Mati. I hear a lot from older nurses as well about the quality of new nurses coming out of MDC; it's really encouraging!

I see a lot of people posting here anxious about acceptance and I just wanted to say that I hope we all get into to the programs of our choice, whether its at MDC or another college or university. I know I've worked really hard getting the grades that I have, as I'm sure you have all done the same. I think we all deserve a shot at becoming something we want to be, I know we all definitely want it bad enough!!! And people who want things that bad, don't stop until they get to exactly where they want to be. A panel somewhere is going to see this and say, "Let's give him/her a chance, I really feel he/she wants it." And from then on forward, our lives will never be the same.

Hi guys!

I'm happy to see that more people joined the thread! Welcome to you all!!! :yeah:

Neyla: When I applied they didn't tell me anything about the existence of a part time program. For what I know, there is no part-time on the spring. Even though I heard that someone said this was going to be the first time they are accepting applications for a PT on the spring. However, if they do, it's gonna be really messy because they didn't say anything to a lot of people.

BTW your scores are fine. I think that with your 84 you have a pretty good chance of getting accepted. Like I've said in other posts, last semester people with a score of 82 got in, and if this time the teas scores are lower, I believe that people with at least an 80, or maybe less, should get in.

Now, changing the subject...Today I had the CPR course. I had a really good time. :D

The class wasn't hard at all...just a little tiring. I saw ZeppHead8 there, but I'm kind of shy, so I didn't even say Hi! :o

Well guys I'm looking forward to read more of your posts!

Good luck! :anpom:

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd put in my two cents for those anticipating acceptance to the program for Spring!!!

I'm currently in the FT program that started this semester. It has been going great so far, so don't be scared that MDC won't prepare you--it will! :)

My advice for you guys starting in Spring:

-Get your finances straightened out, there are a lot of things you might decide to buy during the program!

-Prepare to get up EARLY! Parking at the Medical campus is UNBEARABLE from 10AM-1pm...

-You don't need to get that Clinical Nursing Bag until about a month into your skills lab. We've only used the pen light from it so far!

-You totally got to use Taber's from day 1!

-"Nurse's Pocket Guide" is used from day 1 in clinicals--don't try to skip it!

-Don't bother getting the MDC Curriculum. it is such a waste of money.

-You *must* study from your ATI books a long with your fundamentals book. It is so incredibly helpful. I can tell who hasn't opened the ATI books in my class.

-Yes, a lot of people flunk the first Fundamentals test. You need to read the material and understand it. You need to do N-Clex questions and ATI questions. Use various resources and try out what works for you.

-I got a 90% on my first Fundies exam--This is a B!!!!!!! IT HURTS because it FELT like an A!!! So prepare for HUMBLE PIE!

-Enjoy time with your families now.

-It is possible to get straight A's. I know a girl who follows her schedule very strictly. She sits in the same seat in the library every day, and leaves home to take care of her child every day. She is a busy single mom and does great on all her tests.

-Don't be lazy in clinical, everyone notices! But also, don't worry if you feel stupid. Everyone will feel stupid the first semester... I know I do

-The library has a lot of good resources for careplans... use them

-As for Fundamentals... read the Infection Control chapter(in my book, chapter 34) and Immobility chapter(I think 47) BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS. get this info DRILLED into your head. Read all the little diagrams and charts and boxes. Read all the sample careplans in the fundies book as you read a long your chapter. Yes, know what the RN needs to delegate. My professor got a lot of students on the first test because they didn't read the charts and diagrams.

-And do something fun every week... take naps. Go out with your kids. You can have a life if you know your priorities. Everything in moderation!

-Oh and I almost forgot. RESPECT AND APPRECIATE YOUR PROFESSORS! You will not like some of them--I don't--but refuse to backbite. Some of them have attitudes--there is no denying it--but try to understand them. They can't stand laziness, and YES THERE WILL BE "MOOCHERS" and "LEECHES" in nursing school! RUN from these people. But your professors in the end are there to see you be great nurses. They don't want to fail you!

Good luck!!!!!
