May 2009 Graduates!!! Do you have a job yet?

Published

I was just curious if everyone is finding jobs? I personally only applied for one hospital as there are 4 within 30 miles from me, but the one I applied for is the closest. Everyone in my class including myself started applying in January and most of us interviewed in Feb. I haven't got a call yet but they said they would be calling this week....I am crossing my fingers!!!

Anyhow I know that everyone around here is pretty much not having a problem but I didn't know what it was like in other areas.

Whats the pay like?

benifits?

reimbursements?

The position I applied for actually is on the lower end of the pay scale, but the benefits and reimbursement outway what the other hospitals offer. So what factors did you calculate when finding your first job as an GN.

I am in Wisconsin and the pickings are slim. I have applications out in about a 50 to 60 mile radius (what I feel I would be able to drive and still have a family life), and I have not heard a thing. I had one interview for a nurse residency program and I did not get hired for that. I believe the HR dept told me they had over 50 apply. Trying not to get discouraged, but that is difficult as just about all the students in my graduating class have jobs already. Guess I just have more time to study for now. (gotta look at the bright side!)

A side question, what is the strangest interview question you have ever been asked? A friend of mine was asked to list 10 things you can do with a watermelon besides eat it. I thought that was a good one. My guess is they were looking at fast thinking and creativity.

I like this topic!

My nursing school gave us a list of questions that were received from alumni, and one of them was:

"You are hosting guests at your home for Thanksgiving dinner. You are getting ready to sit down and eat dinner, but as you open the oven you realize that you forgot to turn the oven on and the turkey is uncooked. What do you do?"

I talked to someone today who just graduated with her bachelors and we we talking about how there aren't that many jobs around where we live and she said that she thought she might go back to waiting tables. I thought to myself are you crazy. You might not get the dream job that you want right out of school but at least try to find something you didn't work that hard to go back to waiting tables. I told her to go to the hospital where I got a job and I think she thought I was crazy. Yes, the hospital I will be working at is a rural hospital but they are really growing. Just bought a surgery center and starting a cath lab. I will admit that it wasn't my first option but you know what in this climate we are living in you can't be picky and you have to take what you can get. I'm actually excited to be working there now. I start Monday and can't wait. I know I will be taken care of at the hospital as an employee and that makes me feel great. To all of you still looking just remember that you are valuable and someone will pick up on that. I wish everyone the best of luck.

Specializes in ER.

I only applied to one hospital, my friends told me I was crazy and that I needed to not be so picky, but I was hired 2 months befroe graduation (May 16) in the Emergency department $25.75/hr- in WI. Sadly ,many of my fellow graduates have not been hired.

I live in Houston and was FINALLY offered a job! I applied everywhere! Even out of town and state- San Antonio offered me a job and we would've had to move:eek: I am so thankful I found a job and dont have to relocate (I am married w/ 2 small kids).

I live in VA at the border of NC and have not found a job yet. There are only about 15 from my class that has found employment so far. We had a graduating class of 86. All the hospital jobs on this end has a freeze on them. However, most of the nursing homes are hiring and desperately seeking. The salary rate here is $17-22. I'm still looking and waiting.:redbeathe
