I was just curious if everyone is finding jobs? I personally only applied for one hospital as there are 4 within 30 miles from me, but the one I applied for is the closest. Everyone in my class including myself started applying in January and most of us interviewed in Feb. I haven't got a call yet but they said they would be calling this week....I am crossing my fingers!!!
Anyhow I know that everyone around here is pretty much not having a problem but I didn't know what it was like in other areas.
Whats the pay like?
benifits?
reimbursements?
The position I applied for actually is on the lower end of the pay scale, but the benefits and reimbursement outway what the other hospitals offer. So what factors did you calculate when finding your first job as an GN.
Oh, Im so sorry to hear that. It's sad that this job hunting business makes us feel that all our hard work is for nothing Something good will come from this, it will, we just need to be faithful and patient, God will bless us, he will, I believe that. I have just finished 5 yrs. of school and no luck with a job yet.
I feel the same, five years of hard work for nothing. I got lucky, right place right time. The computer way of sending out applications is terrible, you need to go market yourself! The computer just shows them a piece of paper, it does not show the real you. I went out with my suit and resume and went to every place I know that hires nurses. Some gave out spot interviews, some did not. But at least you were face to face which I think is important. That is what got me a job even though they were looking for experience, she said she saw and heard something in me that she did not see in the others. I am telling you, go out and sell yourselfs, even if they say they want experience.
If I went to hospitals I would ask to go up to HR for an applications, they are tough to get into, they usually will tell you to fill out online. It is the other places you need to focus on. Rehab, subacute, LTC, etc. I used to just walk in and ask to fill out an application. If you are lucky they will let someone know you are there and ask for an interview on the spot. Open houses are great too! I used to use indeed.com and select my focus location (great job website for RN's) and see who was hiring. Instead of filing out online, I would go to them in person and usually get an interview on the spot. It is being at the right place at the right time. Hospitals will not generally do this, focus on other areas if the hospitals are not hiring new grads. In my area I had a job offer from a hospital, but at the last minute they had to give it internally. Ticked me off, but that is life in the hospital. Tough to get into sometimes. Good luck. 3-6 months is the norm for the new grads in my area. It took me almost 3 months. Don't give up, there is that perfect job for you somewhere.
When I was doing my clinical rotations, I used to go see HR and talk to the nursing recruiters quite often. I also made sure I spoke to nursing managers directly involved in the hiring on whichever floor I was on. The last place I was at, I would have LOVED to have a job on the floor I was on. They are even hiring right now, but when I spoke to the hiring manager there she said they were burned last time when they hired GNs and so they wouldn't even consider me even if I had worked at the hospital before (This was the hospital I was a tech at). At this hospital I am in contact with the nursing recruiter through e-mail and also with another hospital in town.
As far as I know and with the research I've done, any other place that isn't a hospital around here won't even look at an application until AFTER you have your RN - and my NCLEX isn't until June.
I'm remaining positive and persistent on most days.
This is a reply for RENO1978. My username doesnt have capability to respond to private messages. I do appreciate your information about the hospitals in Washington State. I am graduating (ADN) next week, June 3 and I am planning to take NCLEX around July so I guess I will be late for the interview at Kadlec Medical Center. BTW I saw in your reply that you have MICU. When I had my clinicals, I really enjoyed, can you give me more insight in how's your day-today? Thank again.
finally i got a job ( coz i worked for them during my nursing school).. i applied so many places b4 but didnt hear a single ph call.. so many of my graduate friends r not getting any job (abt 90% of them didnt work at hsp during nursing school) ...so it is very very important to start working at hsp after get done with ur 1st med surg clinical rotation ( this advise for 1st yr nursing student).. things r not the way it used to be... good luck to those who still looking for jobs.

No luck so far for me. I'm in Northeast Florida and of course, no one is hiring GNs. I went off on a limb and applied in Orlando, but I am on a waiting list for an internship there. I am thinking I will apply to a hospital with a GN program in South Georgia and just drive. It's a shame about Jacksonville. I have tech experience, but had to leave my tech job as it was PRN and I was not getting enough hours eventually to cover child care. Since the hospitals around here are really only hiring internally now, my experience means nothing!
