Lotus births.

I have never heard of this before today. Any comments?Lotus Birth

I am thinking #1 Anemia or #2 Polycythemia. What's to prevent that?

I could not believe what I read on that site.

lol, I was just thinking of lotus births a couple nights ago at work. I "known people who knew people" who did it... then again, I also know someone who cooked up a "placenta stew" for a friend post-birth.

I live in fear of encountering a lotus birth. I can't imagine the smell! ewww...

(lmao off at the cat comments a few pages back! Got the silliest mental image of strays sneaking into the birth center...)

Years and years ago there was a Steven King movie, cannot remember the name, that involved cats and hundreds of strays surrounded a house.

That's kind of what comes to my mind only it's a birthing center.

Instead of cats sitting on fences, they are lined up looking through the nursery window!

NICU_nurse,

I think you have offended some people. For some people, that is their culture and natural birthing was here long before "medical" birthing was. They were able to keep the human race going, so they must have been doing something right

Those people who are offended are welcome to PM me. :)

I have absolutely nothing against natural birth. I hold no preference for "medical" birthing. I never said either of those things here or anywhere else.

I never said that carting your placenta around in an ice-cream tub was wrong. You can take a bath in a tub full of placentas, wear one on your head as a bonnet, fashion two of them into a brassiere using the umbilical cords for shoulder straps, and bite into a juicy, medium-rare placenta burger for all I care.

My only point is that it's cruel to the cat. I'm calling PETA.

From another site:

"Placenta Tartare:

Using a scrupulously clean meat grinder, grind the placenta like hamburger, or alternatively, chop finely with a knife for 'best texture'. Mix with a bit of red wine, garlic (not too heavy on the garlic--it's another anticoagulant!) and seasonings to taste (suggestions include mustard, and/or curry, tabasco (light on this, as it might promote bleeding!, or even Italian cooking herbs, depending on what her taste is.) and serve with capers, chopped hard boiled eggs and some onion. Tartare is traditionally done with raw egg, but I'm not sure you could pay me to feed a new mom a raw, unpasturized egg! Serve with toast. Italian cooking herbs (basil, oregano, marjoram) have an oxytocic effect, which may be helpful. As another regional way of preparing includes olive oil and salt as an alternative to raw egg, the italian herbs with olive oil would blend very well.

Alternatively, if you want to cook it, you should be able to do just about anything you'd do with chunks of chicken or beef. Cook lightly, and at lower heat than you might normally use."

Emphasis in bold is mine. I found that intensely amusing. :D

I can see it now:

(Charming hostess places a santa-shaped tray of assorted cookies on the table in front of ooh-ing guests.)

Neighbor: Wow, Charlene, those look FAB!

(reaches for cookie)

Neighbor: Oatmeal-raisin! My faves. How'd you know?

(winks at her lasciviously as he takes a mouthful)

Charlene: Oh, Bob, you're too MUCH! But that's not a RAISIN...
