I have never heard of this before today. Any comments?Lotus Birth
I am thinking #1 Anemia or #2 Polycythemia. What's to prevent that?
WHY WOULD SHE EVEN WANT IT????
(Sarcastically) Because, PeggySue, her children were irrevocably harmed by being prematurely seperated from their "love-heart thing" and it "hurt their heart" to be seperated from it.
Wouldn't you want to keep it forever and ever and ever...................even if it did rot and attract cats?
i think if we are gonna all keep placentas until they fall off we could but it and the baby matching outfits...dress it up in a bonnet and everything...make it a part of the family like siamese twins....
then when it falls off you can put it in the baby book like the first locke of hair ;)
Man, I thought I was open minded but this just blows my mind open. I could handle and even see some of the sentimental/ symbolic value of barring the placenta under a tree. Even though It gives me the willies, I can respect the culture of those that must (yuk) eat it.
BUT.. this is just to weird and far fetched for me.
If you look at things threw the eyes of the natural birth advocates, you can usually see some benefit to doing things the way they do but what good could come of this?
As for the possible health effects to the baby, my thoughts are. #1 infection, I mean the placenta is just the best place for bacteria to grow, warm and wet. placed in a bag it would be nice and dark. and OMG its attached to the baby.
#2 hemorrhage, a good yank on that cord could be nasty.
#3 Anemia or polycythimia, I read a study on clamping the cord only after it stopped pulsing and polycythimia was the main problem.
#4 and the biggest reason, THE CATS THE CATS OMG!!! THE CATS
lol could you imagine what the L&D units would be like? cats sneaking up the back hallway, ambushing mothers and babies as they exited the hospital, dressing up in scrubs and impersonating nurses .....
You guys are all too funny....I read about this years ago, couldnt understand it any better then.
I am a big advocate for natural bith but this takes the cake I do have to say, you cant get much grosser!
As a side note, on the topic of eating placenta, besides cultural reasons, I had read somewhere that it is believed that eating the placenta following delivery can help minamize bleeding, much like giving pitocin. I can't remember how it worked but a lot of people do this instead of meds. Again to each their own. You couldnt pay me to eat placenta, I would rather take my changes hommorhaging!!!!!
