I have never heard of this before today. Any comments?Lotus Birth

I am thinking #1 Anemia or #2 Polycythemia. What's to prevent that?

It takes all kinds.

Yes, Michelle, I saw that on Discover Channel once. I can't for the life of me remember what country it was, but people did eat the placenta. In a weird way, I suppose in a really economically poor country, the thought would be that the nutrients would be good for a recovering mother. Though their reasons were more religious/spiritual/social.

Oh great! I predict a rash of addendums to the 5 page birth plans!

I would love to see the Neo's face if called in for this one!!!!

Wonder what they would do if it were mec stained??? Is it "good luck" to have a green placenta? Maby they have a specially sewn green placenta bag just for the ocassion??

NICU_nurse,

I think you have offended some people. For some people, that is their culture and natural birthing was here long before "medical" birthing was. They were able to keep the human race going, so they must have been doing something right

Placenta with Pasta...ummm sounds delish.....I kind of like the placenta art-it looks like the Tree of Life-too cool...But I would want my original nicely framed and under glass....air tight glass.....I have read about Lotus birth on the net-how funny is that website? The woman is loaning out that red velvet placenta bag-it has been used in over 20 births...What a fashion statement that makes....From that site you can link to lots of birth stories with pics-Check out "Neil's birth" I saw that one a long time ago-and never forgot it.......Who puts their pics all over the net like that? After I miscarried the last time I searched around for some reading material to help me get through and found web sites full of dead baby pics....argh...I remeber a nurse on some BB (aol-I think ) that linked a pic of her stillborn baby to her signature line....That was a nice surprise............................... PS-I think the preserved tonsils would make GROOVY earrings........PSS-Cheerful-do a search for "foreskin restoration" Then check out" body modification" for some real fun (beware)

Here's a very timely news story:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/beritamalaysia/message/57893

BEIJING - Some hospital employees in a city in China's Guangdong province

may be illegally supplying fresh placentas for sale on the street.

People are buying placentas to cook and eat at home. They believe that the

organ, which connects a foetus with its mother and is expelled during birth,

has medicinal and beauty-enhancing value and can boost sexual virility when

consumed.

One roadside placenta seller has reportedly boasted that she could secure

100 placentas in two days.

A reporter from the Information Daily recently came upon the seller - a

woman in her 50s - in Guangdong's Zhongshan city.

The woman told the reporter that her brother worked in a hospital and had

contacts with several hospitals from which they could get a constant supply

of placentas.

Introducing herself as Madam Gu, the woman, who sets up a stall to tout her

ware, said that her family had been in the business for years, which earned

them 100,000 yuan (S$22,000) in three years when they operated in Shantou,

another city.

Even customers who placed bulk orders would not be disappointed as her

contacts in hospitals were just a phone call away.

They would pack the 'goods' in ice and even dry them in the hospital if

requested to do so.

Mdm Gu was seen peddling placentas near a shopping mall in Zhongshan, her

main draw being a placard.

She also avidly gave out name cards, together with the pledge that she could

take advance orders, reported Sina.com.cn yesterday .

Depending on the size, her placentas go for 80 yuan to 150 yuan each.

Having plied her trade in Zhongshan for two months, Madam Gu said her

customers were increasing.

Her placenta soup also sells well. Customers pay 150 yuan for a can. Some

buy the soup as a tonic for their parents.

Placentas do have some medicinal value, according to an official of the

Guangdong Health Department.

But he warned consumers that there were laws governing the selling of

placentas. Also, some placentas could be contaminated by disease and

bacteria and be harmful to health, he said.

And the woman from whose body a placenta is taken may consider it an affront

to her dignity, he added.

oookay then...
