I am in a 5 month ER orientation, so the nurse manager asked me and the others orienting to not work the holidays (since it would be time and a half). Perfectly fine with me! But hubby is military and has to work
I hope in at the end of next year to switch to part time or per diem and have a family, so that would limit my holiday requirement. Eventually I want to leave bedside and do nursing education, so I will definitely avoid holidays then. I do NOT like working holidays!
I'm just starting my new job and was lucky enough to be scheduled off for both christmas and new years this year, but I know it is a rotating each year schedule where you work either christmas or new years and then the next year it switches. My kids are excited because a few weeks ago I dropped the bomb that I may have to work christmas and now I have it off!
While I think it was a company policy to rotate holidays, our facility has never done this and nobody has ever complained. If the holiday falls on your day to work, you work. We have set schedules so it's easy to plan for this and there are always options. Either work the holiday as scheduled if you don't have other plans and want the pay, switch with somebody else, or ask for the day off. Getting it off isn't too hard if you plan ahead and ask for it off with a LOT of notice. If there is more than one request for the holiday off it is based first on seniority if the request is put in before April 1rst and second on first come first served basis for requests placed after April 1rst.
Me me! I work in a clinic, though. We all have holidays off. My manager just asked me if I wanted Christmas Eve or New Year's Eve off, but I declined. I like working those days, because everyone's so happy and festive! It's fun working with a skeleton crew. I'm always a bit bemused that women actually want to get a Pap smear on Christmas Eve, though.
My home health agency mandates that all employees work all holidays due to low staffing. It's ridiculous, and it's pushing good staff out the door. As for me, my regular schedule had me off at 7a on Thanksgiving and not working until Friday at 11p. Same thing on Christmas Eve and Day. So although technically I'm working the holiday, it's not intolerable. The posts here definitely inspire me to know that a more fair arrangement is available and to seek out a new employer after January 1.

Definitely Per Diem. I've done my time.
