When I worked in the hospital, whoever worked Christmas one year, got it off the next and so on.

Now that I work in dialysis, no one works either Christmas or Thanksgiving Day. I will work New Year's Day, but I don't mind. I never do anything for New Year's anyhow. I like dialysis for this among other reasons.

I was only required to work nightshift Christmas eve. I'm a bedside nurse. This was awesome !

Specializes in Acute Care Pediatrics.

My PRN contract states I have to work one major winter holiday. And I worked Thanksgiving. So. :)

I'm working Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve, but not New Year's day. I'm okay with it for now, I don't have kids or a partner to worry about. Maybe later in life I'll try harder to have time off.

I wouldn't mind working the holiday because somebody has to be there. In my hospital, working a holiday is not an option. Who falls on holiday has to work it. If there can be a choice, it is better because there are hard working nurses who ratherrather the holiday off. Nothing is wrong with that, rather it an opinion to respect.

I work at a 200-bed hospital. We alternate holidays but I actually like working them. It is the time when some of our patients are not visited (perhaps no family close) and some are completely alone. We do our best to let them know we care about them and help keep them from being lonely (sit with them, have pet visitation, etc).

I'm a school nurse, I'm off Dec 19th-Jan 3rd, paid. I never work holidays, nights, or weekends, obviously. When I worked in the hospital we rotated holidays. If you worked Labor Day you were off Thanksgiving. if you worked Christmas Eve, you were off Christmas, if you worked New Years Eve, you were off New Years Day. Then, you either worked 1 of the following: Memorial Day or 4th of July. Everyone was in A group or B group and A group worked certain ones that year and worked the opposite the next. But I had years where I worked almost all the holidays so not sure how that worked....

Most surgery nurses I know I'm not!! Been a nurse almost 3 yrs and haven't worked a turkey day or Christmas yet!!

Specializes in Forensic Nurse.

I work for a state facility, if the holiday falls on your day off, then your off. (Even if it's falls on all the holidays) However, if for some unfortunate reason you end up scheduled for all the holidays; then you get to choose which holiday you would like off.

We don't get holiday pay, we earn comp time.

Specializes in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgical.

I've never worked Christmas or Thanksgiving as a nurse yet somehow. I volunteered myself for New Year's Eve and Day this year, because I really don't care about the holiday since I quit drinking.

Holidays are relative to me because we rarely celebrated them on the actual day of growing up. My mom was a nurse and, like most, pushed the holiday off to another day. The grandparents had a really hard time with that concept.

Specializes in Psych, Addictions, SOL (Student of Life).

Since my son is older and my family celebrates of Christmas eve I actually volunteered to work the Holidays - after all it's time and 1/2 and I could use the bucks, plus one f my co-works with two young children gets to have Christmas day off to be with family.

Hppy

Specializes in Psych, Hospice, Surgical unit, L&D/Postpartum.

I do not work on weekends or Holidays because I work in Case management doing home visits for those with medical illnesses and disabilities. I kind of wish I could be a part of working the holidays...maybe on a pedi floor or in labor and delivery. Those are my two passions that I hope to be able to work in someday. Maybe when I finally finish my RN to BSN.. sigh..
