My secret is working Per Diem. I only have to work 1 winter holiday and 1 summer holiday. And I pretty much get to choose which one I work. This year, I am working New Years. I typically work whatever holiday my husband works.

I also don't have to work a specified number of weekends, or hours per week. Per Diem rocks!

Specializes in Wound and Ostomy care, Neuro, Med-Surg.

Before I had kids I would volunteer holidays, esp Christmas. I enjoyed the double time pay and didn't mind.

Now I have two kids and am very fortunate enough to work in an outpatient setting. My clinic is closed major holidays and weekends. ?

Specializes in School Nursing, Hospice,Med-Surg.

School Nurse: I never work a weekend, holiday, summer, evening, or night. I get a week for winter break and a week for spring break. My hours are Monday-Friday, 7:45-3:15.

All that time off makes up for the crap-tastic salary.

I don't work any holidays unless I sign up. I do sometimes because I like the holiday pay.

I am the only registry CNA on our unit.

When I moved to Texas over 20 yrs ago, I wound up working every Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years day for 3 years. When I said something to my manager, I was told everyone did. This was not the case! I now work weekends in home care. If the holiday falls on a weekend, I work. Otherwise, I'm off. Most of our patients do not want visits on the holidays. And if they do, they need it! Before working weekends, I would be on-call for my patients (we had "set" patients) and never received a call from a patient except to wish me a happy holiday.

I've been working in a clinic, so holidays and weekends off! I don't start my inpatient position until 1/11/16, at which point, I expect to kiss my holidays off good-bye!

Specializes in Outpatient/Clinic, ClinDoc.

I work in clinical documentation (chart reviews, etc) - no weekends, holidays, nights. Actually, I've been outpatient for the last 15 years so I never work em! :)

My secret? I left the bedside and took a M-F 9-4 job with no weekends or holidays.

Specializes in Emergency/Trauma/LDRP/Ortho ASC.

Agency per diem:)))

Specializes in geriatrics.

I used to work every Christmas before I was a nurse and since becoming a nurse, except this year. I don't mind either way.

Since I'm management, we have all the statutory holidays off.
