Hi guys. I am a new nurse and I had a horrible day. Hoping y'all can help me out. I just started at a memory care unit 3 weeks ago.
Today, I sent someone out for a fall for the 1st time ( broken wrist) ... called the NP... she ordered me to send them out so I called Emergency ... attempted to reach the family ... paramedics came and took her to the ER ... finally got in touch with the family. The 1st thing they ask is if she had one of our aides with her. I found out later that this was policy which I was never told about.
This lady now says she is coming after my license. Should I be scared?

There's nothing to report. You weren't aware of the policy to send an aide with the resident to the ER. Mistakes happen. The lady was upset that her loved one fell and got hurt, but once again this happens, it's unfortunate but it's reality. What did your manager or supervisor say about the situation? Are they aware the family is upset?
Yes I called all the higher ups and informed them of the situation..they were all upset with me??but how was I supposed to go something I was never told of? Lady called back 8 more times to check on her mom and inform me of how I would be jobless and without food?

Wow, I'm wondering how many places have the extra staff to send an aide with a resident to the hospital

Couple things come to mind - hospitals freq like someone to accompany NH/AL residents for information gathering purposes; and then as babysitters.

And in these Covid times, are hospitals permitting extra folk with pts???
OP - any chance there was something in pt's care plan? The fact that TPTB are so bent-out-of-shape makes me wonder if there was some kind of contractual agreement at the time of admission for this resident? One never knows! I'll bet the pt is PVT pay. Anything to keep the family happy!
BTW, is the family local?
OP - you might seriously consider changing your screen name here. Anonymity is a GOOD thing on social media. You never know who is following here, incl trolls and instigators. The mods can help you.
Yes I work at an " exclusive" community.. they are all PVT pay..
And your ?.. gonna change the screen name ..I wasn't even thinking. Thank ya

This woman sounds like a....you know what. What a miserable person. Accidents happen. Definitely bring it up to your supervisor or DoN. You'll be okay. Take it one day at a time.
It's not all about you, either. This woman doesn't sound very happy, and she sounds like she's projecting it on you. I wouldn't worry too much. It'll blow over a the resident is fine.

Your employer may throw you under the bus, but I doubt your license will be affected. The family member who's calling you sounds unwell, herself. I would speak to her in a very neutral tone of voice and do more listening than talking. In fact, it would probably be better if your manager handled her from here on out.
Yes , my employer definitely has thrown me under.. which makes me rethink working here all thogher..
All 9 phone calls the family member made that day I just listened and just told her factually info about her mother .. I have asked my manager to speak with her from now on ? ? good advice ..thank ya

Just started there 3 weeks ago and now this relatively minor issue. Your employer is "throwing you under the bus" and lacks support....this speaks volumes.
I would be reconsidering my decision to work there and, if warranted, looking to move on when the opportunity presents itself
Just my 2 cents

As other, more wiser nurses have said here before - research your state's BON for why nurses lost their license. Not having an aid go to the hospital with your mother where there are competent staff to care for her is not going to be one of them. Even if she makes the complaint and the board investigates, you did the right thing by sending her to the ER! The board is looking for incompetence.
The only thing you have to worry about is possibly losing your job. If they're making such a big deal about it then I don't think you want to work there. I'd start putting your feelers out to see what else is out there now. There are TONS of vaccine nurse jobs open nationwide that pay well, even if they are temporary.

Huh. Since she cares so much, why wasn't she running her obnoxious a$$ off to the hospital to be with mama?
Of course, it's easier to bluster, insult and threaten someone than to actually do something productive.
