I am just curious. I am 37 and will be taking my last pre-req in January for the nursing program at my local community college. I have noticed many people here are over 30, so I wanted to just blurt out the question. How many of us 30 somethings are making a career change into Nursing?
I'm 37 and making a career change, but I still work in an office for now.
I am 32 and will be starting an Accelerated BSN program next week. This is a career change (second career).
Hi everyone,
I'm 36 and just finishing my general education credits. I begin micro in September. I hope to finish nursing school by the time I hit the big 40!! I am still waiting to hear if I got into nursing school, otherwise I will continue at our local community college.
It is nice speaking with everyone!!
OMG you mtamnake it sound all so easy!
Started NS in a 3 yr BSN program, at 17. I freaked out and dropped out by nursing 2. Wish I had more guidence back then.
Anyway, second try towards NS 1997 took several pre reqs. Husband got Cancer, had to drop out.
Third try: 2005 Did a few more pre reqs, We were in the proscess of adoption, the middle of the AP2 semester we got a call the we were picking up our daught in two weeks. I was more than halfway done with the class. The professor gave me two days off. When I came back to class my daughter found out She needed me more than I needed to finish ap2, so I had to drop!
LAST TRY! I'm taking AP2 w/ computer literacy as my FINAL PRE req!
It has only taken me 10 years and I still don't have my associaytes. 22 more credits to go!
Thanks for the support:balloons:
I am 33 and I am volunteering to make sure nursing is what I want to do. I am a little nervous thinking I am starting a little late on a new career, I to have been in an office setting for so long. If you have any advice please let me know! Should I go ahead and start my pre-req. or wait?
ME ! I'm 37 and making a total career change. I worked in an office, then was a stay at home mom for my children, then became a real estate agent, now going back to school for nursing.
I start A&P I this coming Wed. The nursing program at my community college doesn't begin until Sept. 08 so it will be a while for me.......
I graduated college in 1993 so it should be interesting going back to school again...........
Dawn
I will finish my ADN in May 2008. I will be 40 in Jan 2008.
They majority of my nursing class is 30+ and I am by no means the old lady of the class. Two of my classmates are grandmothers--and neither they nor their children had babies in their teens.
Our professors tell us that the avg age of a nurse is the mid-40's. I spent 15 years on my first career. I am looking forward to 25 years in this one.
Age is just a number.

I am not a 30 something but a 40 something. I am 42 years old, married mother of two (ages 18 and 23) and have decided to go back to get my R.N. I currently work as a C.N.A./Unit Secretary/Monitor Technician/Phlebotomist/EKG Technician in Intensive Care so this is exactly a total career change. It took me this long to get up the courage to go back to school. My husband is discouraging me because he says I am too old to go back to school. I am doing it any ways. There are a lot more 30 + nursing students than you think. Not all nursing students are fresh out of high school. Actually you will probably be more serious about you studies than a student fresh out of high school. A lot of students drop out of nursing school because it is so hard. It takes a mature person to get into to nursing because it is such a serious and responsible job. Maybe we should get a 30 + support group going for nursing students over 30.
