Had foley checkoffs today!

Published

I'm a competent foley inserter!! Woohoo!! It's funny. So far this has been the most 'technical' checkoff we've been required to perform and yet it's the one I was least worried about. Go figure...

I hope everyone has a nice holiday!! Enjoy your break!! You've earned it!!:nurse:

Congratulations!! :yeah:We have our foley checkoffs next week. Hope I do as well as you.

Good job newbie08!! And good for you that you were not that worried about it!

I don't think I was worried enough for my foley check-off, and I did not pass the 1st time. Before my second try, I practiced at home with my foley kit. When I did it the 2nd time, my instructor asked me if I had practiced, and when I said I did, she said that she could tell.

It's interesting that you posted this today because this afternoon in clinical, I inserted my 2nd foley! It was on a female this time (1st time I did it was on a male).

I hope you have a nice holiday, too!

How'd you do with doing a female for the first time? We've been told it can be much harder to get it in the correct spot...especially compared to a mannequin! :uhoh3:

Hey there,

Just out of curiosity as a Nursing student starting in 1-1/2 months, do the patients know that you are a student practicing on them????????

Yes! You have instructor w/u & generally several students. It can be intimidating!

Congrats! :yeah: Foley was my hardest checkoff! Passed 1st time though!

It actually went well. :) The patient had a friend come visit, who was a retired RN. She was a big help by just being there, helping her friend feel comfortable, and assisting me when I needed it. She was actually the one who guided me in inserting the foley in the correct location (MUCH thanks to her).

I was a bit nervous because I had heard stories from people/peers who said they did not get it in the right orifice on the first try. It is definitely different from mannequins who have the perfect anatomy. :) As women get older, the area "down there" changes as well.

When I introduce myself to the patients, I do state that I am a nursing student working with their nurse that day. When I am performing skills such as an IV, phlebotomy, or foley, I do not state that I am practicing on them. :) Even if I am scared inside, I act as confident as possible. Of course, I find myself needing a lot of guidance, but it usually turns out okay.

Aww, I hope you will be okay! Many students are scared when they start out in clinicals for the first time.....performs skills on real patients.....pass meds on real patients. Clinical experience can be such a valuable experience. It is so helpful to take what you learn in class and put it into practice. It helps you remember information better!

I wonder when it will be my turn!

i must train a lot not to miss the spot! nor to forget silly things as cleaning or gloves removal - due to the nervousness

Good job!!

you'll think back at this when you're working as a nurse and laugh. all the steps, procedures, etc go right out the window when you've been working as a nurse for a while. Soon you'll worry about just getting it done, not whether or not you opened the package of sterile gloves properly? did i swirl the iodine at least 6 times? did i clamp the bag? etc etc etc :)
