I know it sounds like a silly question. But, I'm worried because I know most doctors want to have good looking nurses to work alongside. Also, I know many male patients will want to have good looking nurses taking care of them. I'm so insecure about my appearance and have struggled w/ eating disorders on and off for years. I'm a third year student in the fall and am already dieting like crazy to be in top shape for my first clinical. I know I shouldn't worry about this or let it enter my mind, but it always comes up! Ahhh . Thanks guys.

I don't think its a silly question if you're coming from a background of ED, but I honestly don't think it matters. MDs and other professionals you will be working with will be more concerned with your competence rather than your looks. This is not like trying to become a stewardess in the 1950's :)

casey, i don't know where you're getting your information, but this just isn't true.
for those who do want good-looking people only (which i never heard), they're creeps, to put it politely.
your nsg ability will be based on your competence, your ability to work on a team and your empathy/sensitivity to your pts.
your head has been totally filled with garbage.
and think about it:
would you really want to work w/someone who bases their opinions on such superficial and meaningless qualities???
do not stoop yourself to that level.
show them what you're made of...
from the inside, out.

let me see how i should address your post. I think you are worrying too much. People don't care if you are good looking or not. Believe me, most of the nurses that I work with they are pretty much over weight or obese. I am not kidding you . You know nurses eat when they work or understress. Don' t worry about your look or your weight. As long as you can work and do a good job, it doesn't matter how you look!

Leslie,
I was thinking the exact same thing. You said it better than I could.

Most of us would not have a job if that was the case. I am far from 'good-looking' if I say so myself.
I don't give a care in this world whether I do or not. I am there to treat and care for my pts.
I have never been rejected to a job/position I have ever applied for in nursing.
Hope you stop dwelling on this and have a successful career.
Good luck!

i wouldn't worry what you look like... how are your skills? nursing isn't about how you look for the patient.. believe me they don't care if you have 1 cyclopse eye and green furry hands.... nursing is about being able to care for your patients to the best of your knowledege... the docs ( for the most part ) just want you to follow their orders to take proper care of their patients.... believe me i have been a nurse for 23 years and you can be the cutest girl in the world .. and no one really cares.. it's can you do your job???... if you can't do your job .. you can loose your license .. and the BON dosen't care what you look like ... you can be good looking and work for wal mart....

Oh, my. There is SO much more to life than being 'attractive'. I'm not sure what to say, really. I'm sorry that you feel that way, and it's a sad commentary on what we teach our girls in the US (if you are from the US). Are you from another country? I'm just trying to understand why on earth a young woman would have that kind of attitude in this day and age.

LOL. Since when do I care if doctors or male patients want good looking nurses? You know what I want ... some good looking doctors or male patients for ME to look at.
I have some EDs in my background as well and I know how bad it feels to be insecure. Please don't trouble yourself with a second thought about this. It actually really doesn't matter. In fact, I try to make myself look dowdy when I go to work because it really grosses me out when the old male patients hit on me while I'm cleaning up their doodoo (yes, this has actually happened several times). :chuckle No worries, hon.

If you are working in a hospital the Dr. would not be the one doing the hiring so therefore he/she would not have any say about the looks of the person being hired. What they care about is that you are competent and that you know how to do your job. If you looking to work in a office and the Dr. is going to hire looks over knowlegde then personally that would not be a place I would want to work. Looks may be good enough to get passing grades from certian teachers but are not going to help anyone pass NCLEX.

i happen to think that beauty comes from within. if you're beautiful on the inside, it shows.
as far as being good looking enough to be a nurse -- it's what's inside that counts.
