For some of you, retirement is just around the corner. Has anyone thought of doing something else part time after you have retired from nursing?

I was thinking it would be nice to work in a plant nursery in the good weather, have a Per Diem nursing job, have a booth in an antique mall to maintain, and also buy stuff on the cheap from Craigslist, and resell for more, after cleaning it up and/or refurbishing.

That would keep my mind from rotting and keep me engaged with the world, at my own pace.

Specializes in family practice and school nursing.

I would like to run a little gift shop in a beach town during the nice weather months

I think I'll be spending my retirement years doing what I did in my non-retirement years: WORKING!

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

I would spend time here on AN...LOL I would set up a tutoring/mentoring gig at local colleges. If I had the money...breed and show weimaraners.

Doggie daycare.

But also the same, when I am lucky enough to have a job. Have to make up for all those unemployed times prior to "retirement".

Specializes in NICU, PICU, Transport, L&D, Hospice.

I will likely be one of those individuals who will work in nursing past the age of 65 (God willing) and will die before I ever collect a dime of the $$$ I invested in SS (entitlement my orifice).

I have planned on teaching nursing part time for a little while after retiring from the full time hospital job. I now work the hospital job full time and teach an occasional course for a local university.

Who put that picture of a lady's blank face in my avatar space? That's not me, folks. I look nothing like that. Hmmm.. I go away for a few days and come back to find a strange face in my spot. I'll have to try to get rid of that.

You mean you have an eyes, mouth and nose?

I was wondering why I was seeing this same woman all over the site! Where is the generic guy?

This, as long as I'm physically able. Hoping to transition from bedside to education when I get to the point of not being able to handle patient care. But with my genetics, I'll live a very long life, and I don't expect that my retirement + social security will be able to cover that longevity. Just hoping to work as long as possible to afford my final years; it just won't be very healthy at the end- both of my grandmothers spent their last 5 years (one at 85, one at 90) bed bound but with sound mind. My one grandfather died at 96, my other grandfather is going strong at 93. Both have/had serious health problems.

My semi- retirement is working from home for a Fortune 500 company. 6 figures sitting on my tuchas.

It can be done:yes:

I think that's the new generic guy. It used to be male/female symbols or a question mark, now it's this. Kind of like the Facebook generic photos.
