What job will you do for your semi-retirement?

For some of you, retirement is just around the corner. Has anyone thought of doing something else part time after you have retired from nursing?

I was thinking it would be nice to work in a plant nursery in the good weather, have a Per Diem nursing job, have a booth in an antique mall to maintain, and also buy stuff on the cheap from Craigslist, and resell for more, after cleaning it up and/or refurbishing.

That would keep my mind from rotting and keep me engaged with the world, at my own pace.

Yeah, I plan on working still but from home. Maybe something like an advice nurse for a health insurance company.

Anything for an insurance company... they are BEGGING for experienced nurses.

Just GO for it.

This... ;)

I also plan on being an educator in my semi-retirement-community and staff education, probably a NP as well.

I know I am far away from retirement, but I am going in that direction already...

Specializes in SICU, trauma, neuro.

Lend my skills to a group called the VOMedical (main reason I got into trauma nursing). Maybe teach some CNA classes if I can ever get over my fear of public speaking. Or work as a barista, if only for the free coffee.

Travel the world. Work is over-rated.

Still at least 15 years from retirement, maybe 13 if if I am lucky. I will probably still work a little...who am I kidding! If I can actually afford to retire I thoroughly plan on enjoying doing nothing! I will spend my days dispensing sage advice on AN, reading trashy novels and drinking coffee. I will spend my evenings watching trashy TV with an occasional PBS show to make myself feel better about my massive TV consumption and drinking wine. By then I should have some grand-kids that DH and I can spoil as well.

I will probably do like my mother did and work into my 70's, doing some PD case part-time. I love taking care of lil ol' folks in their 90's; they are so interesting!

Specializes in LTC Rehab Med/Surg.
I have planned on teaching nursing part time for a little while after retiring from the full time hospital job. I now work the hospital job full time and teach an occasional course for a local university.

Who put that picture of a lady's blank face in my avatar space? That's not me, folks. I look nothing like that. Hmmm.. I go away for a few days and come back to find a strange face in my spot. I'll have to try to get rid of that.

Your hair in that picture is certainly lovely.

I plan to work prn doing special projects for my CNO (her idea) and may teach some. Mostly I want to travel and be involved with our City's beautification program

I have to laugh at the generic, faceless one's hairdo......I used to have hair that I wanted to curl UNDER but one side always wanted to flip in the other direction. It drove me nuts!

Specializes in Leadership, Psych, HomeCare, Amb. Care.

I find the faceless face to be pretty creepy.

When I retire from my full time gig, I think I'll do the things I can't do now, including taking an extended motorcycle trip through Europe. Then work part time at an OP MHC.
