are you tougher on foreign nurses?

just wondering if anyone else is?

i've found that i am (don't give them much slack), i guess it's the nationalist streak in me, ha. i feel bad about it at times, but i also feel worse that our government and the hospitals/hcp's are allowing/wanting them to basically take the jobs of fellow americans. foreign nurses don't help to improve our work conditions, wages, etc. i don't think they help improve care either, considering there is NO nursing shortage in my area.

No one's taking "our" jobs. If "we" offer them, then they're up for grabs, no?

No. I also don't understand your approach - if you disagree with your institution's hiring practices, why take that out on your co-workers? It's not their fault they were hired. Fostering disunity among your team by being "tougher on foreign nurses" doesn't improve patient care either IMHO. What are you hoping to accomplish?

For real. There are good nurses and there are bad nurses. Where you were born has NO bearing on what type of nurse you will be.

Treating them differently will not solve any problems; instead, it will create them.

Imagine if you were in their shoes, wouldn't you feel bad?

I couldn't agree more!

To the OP: As a person with parents who were immigrants to this country, I am annoyed. Most people will be. You may even be insulting yourself! FYI, unless you have Native American roots, at some point one of your ancestors were those "foreigners" who are 'stealing' "our" jobs.

If you have a problem with foreign nurses being hired, try to change laws associated with that.....do not, I mean DO not take it out on those foreign nurses who are on your team.

Why should you be "tougher" on foreign nurses? What do you mean they don't improve patient care? If there is a particular foreign nurse/ particular foreign nurses that aren't doing their job adequately, then that reflects on them, not on all foreign nurses as a group.

Really, not a lot on this board has made me mad....I find your post insulting.

i swear that nurses are the major export of the phillipines. that said, the filipino nurses i work with are the nicest, hardest working nurses i know. one or two of them are less astute than i'd like, but more than a few of my american colleagues are also someone less than astute. i'd much rather work with the filipinos than with many of my american co-workers.

anyone who went to nursing school in the phillipines learned neatness at the risk of being whacked with a ruler or verbally smacked down if they didn't learn that lesson. i tell every one of my orientees that when they've mastered the basics, try to get neatness pointers from our filipino colleagues.

i also work with chinese, scots, irish, korean, vietnamese, nigerian, kenyan and guyanan nurses -- not a one of them i wouldn't trust with my mother or my husband. (as for me -- i have a strict policy against being naked where i work.)

You're taking out your ire against your hospital for hiring foreign born nurses against your colleagues? And you're in an adult world?

Foreign nurses shouldn't be hated on because HOSPITALS want them. I wouldn't treat anyone harder because of their nationality. In any work or school setting, they are people just like everyone else and are working to support themselves and families just like everyone else. It's also nice to have people for the many multitude of cultures of patients seen. Who better to understand a client of a certain cultural belief then someone from that same culture.

Everyone that shows respect in the work place deserves respect no matter their culture or position.

A great majority of the American population was foreign at some point.

Sort of reminds me of those that hate on illegals for stealing their jobs but doing nothing about the employers that hire them to cut costs.

It's not like American nurses never go to other countries to do work.

At Ruby Vee, how nice of you to say that about Filipinos and all foreign nurses. To the OP, your topic is pretty insulting to foreign nurses. We maybe foreigners in this country, but we finished nursing school using English books just to meet US standards of nursing care. And we don't steal "jobs", we get offered to do the job.

No, I don't. I have worked with the most excellent nurses that were not American born and bred. Just yesterday, I worked with a Philipino nurse who is THE hardest worker and SMART. He is an asset to the hospital. I also worked with a Chinese and Indian gal, both who are excellent workers. I was the only born and bred American girl. I think we made a pretty darn good team and a colorful one at that.:D

I have issues with anyone, no matter what color and or race, if they are truly stupid, dangerous and or lazy.

I prefer working with the foreign nurses because not only are most astute, they are hard workers.

I find my American compatriots tend to run to "mama" at a drop of a hat when they feel wronged.

So....yeah...I prefer the "ferners."
