are you tougher on foreign nurses?

just wondering if anyone else is?

i've found that i am (don't give them much slack), i guess it's the nationalist streak in me, ha. i feel bad about it at times, but i also feel worse that our government and the hospitals/hcp's are allowing/wanting them to basically take the jobs of fellow americans. foreign nurses don't help to improve our work conditions, wages, etc. i don't think they help improve care either, considering there is NO nursing shortage in my area.

Years ago, I worked with someone who resented immigrants. He used to rant and rail about how the "foreigners" (and usually he used a racial epithet instead of the word "foreigner") came in and took jobs away from HIM. Yes, from HIM. If it wasn't for the immigrants coming to this country, HE would have had opportunities galore!

Of course, I'm sure his limited opportunities had NOTHING to do with him only having a high school education, a lack of motivation, and a general inability to be academic successful in post-high school education. Oddly enough, the immigrant workers that torqued him off the most were well-educated professionals who wouldn't have been competing with him for a job anyway!

You shouldn't take this out on "foreigners", there are no jobs at all anywhere! And I mean any type of job, not just nursing, because of the economic situation around the world. Foreign nurses are not taking anybody's job, how would you feel if somebody were to tell you that men are taking nurses' jobs from women? (there was a time when nursing was for women only until men decided to go into nursing too. Nothing against that just putting an example, hope I don't offend anybody). Some hospitals were hiring foreigner nurses when there were really a shortage of nurses, but who would hire them now when they are not hiring at all? And i do agree with some of the comments about foreigner nurses working harder, i have seen some people who would take a job and after 6 months they would begin working poorly so that the company will fire them, they then can collect and live practically free until their unemployment is exhausted, then they will do the same process again. And if you look carefully who are the people who would take a hard job or a janitor/cleaning job? And if you are debating that foreigner nurses have no right to take jobs in the USA, then the British had no right to take these lands from the american Indias either and yet here we are today, the Great USA.

P.S. Sorry for some incoherences I am typing from an Ipod, couldn't resist :-)

OP, aren't the vast majority of Americans originally immigrants anyway?

any foreign educated nurses want to comment on this for a project I am doing for a Harvard University class on health? Interview would be unintrusive and names would be omitted. Reply to post or private message.

You certainly can't blame the individuals who take advantage of the employment opportunities in the US. If you want to be angry, be angry at the government and employers who create the situation.

wow what a statement, I have jumped through so many hoops for emigration. I wonder if the original OP understands the emotional rollercoaster involved with emigration. I am a little surprised with OP as one of the reasons for my family choosing to move to US is the friendliness and respect we have always received on visits there, we didn't just stick a pin in a map, we visit the US regularly. Like someone else said, there are always good and bad nurses and country of birth is not neccessarily the deciding factor. Maybe the OP is having a bad experience of more than one nurse to make such a blanket statement, I hope it improves for the OP.

I am very thick skinned and am still gonna pursue my dream, I know I am not taking anyone's job as emigration ground to a halt a couple of years ago before the economic slowdown actually hit you all at a local level, it has been really difficult for nurses to gain visas for a long time and that situation will not resolve until it becomes easier for nurses already in the US, they can only recruit overseas if they have not been able to fill the post with a US resident, thats always been the rule! BTW I gained NCLEX first time, with 75 questions in under an hour, so guess I must have learnt a little about nursing in a 'foreign country' over the years :D

This "nationalist streak" sounds a lot like hatred. Take time to ask a foreign nurse about their nursing program. I can tell you that yes they are prepared to do the job right. You should be angry at American schools for not adequately preparing OUR nurses to be a nurse straight out of school. There's that something that disappeared with the old school nurses...I think it was called clinicals...

This post is a joke ,right?

are you tougher on foreign nurses?

are you referring to foreign-trained nurses or just foreign nurses?

If you mean the latter, then please do specify what exactly is "foreign" and what constitutes a real, bonafide American? Because quite frankly the term "foreign nurse" is discriminating; it borders on racism. It's nobody's fault that they have an accent, a different skin color or believe in a different set of values.

If you mean the former, if you are bothered by the fact that they were trained in another country, then I recommend that all US-born professionals (engineers, physicians, etc) be restricted from undergoing further training abroad. After all, you are so keen on keeping it all "here".

Aren't you the nurse that admits to sleeping on the job when doing homecare nursing? Yeah I think I'd rather have a hard working foreign nurse take care of me than a lazy American. (Not saying all Americans are lazy by any means).

I can't post what I'd like to due to the TOS.

But I would like to point out that it's not "nationalism"... it's called bigotry and racism.

You disgust me.
