just wondering if anyone else is?
i've found that i am (don't give them much slack), i guess it's the nationalist streak in me, ha. i feel bad about it at times, but i also feel worse that our government and the hospitals/hcp's are allowing/wanting them to basically take the jobs of fellow americans. foreign nurses don't help to improve our work conditions, wages, etc. i don't think they help improve care either, considering there is NO nursing shortage in my area.
op, to me, it took guts to post what you did.
at least you own what you feel, and i appreciate that.
that said, i have to agree that most of the foreigners i've worked with, were superior.
the only times i got maybe a bit impatient, is if i couldn't understand what they were saying.
but i totally commend their work ethic, moreso than my american counterparts.
the only 'foreigner' i ever had a problem with, was r/t her going into rooms and trying to catch a snooze.
but i also know she worked 24/7 (3 different jobs), was older (60's), and so, my irritation really had nothing to do with her nationality.
if you're going to resent anyone, maybe you should direct it at the employers and agencies who actively recruit them.
but even then, you can't be upset at anyone for wanting a job.

Let's face facts too, all the foreign born nurses I have had priviledge of working with are EXTREMELY hardworking. Whilst SOME of my fellow American born workers ALWAYS want to take a 15min smoke break or do their minimal.I'm sorry but these unending smoke breaks have a way of getting to me.Anyone have a solution?
I agree, I have worked with many foreign people (not nursing) and they had a extremely good work ethic. Shoot even a lot of the foreign students I have seen have had a really good school ethic.

My workplace has the same problem, they even implented a NO SMOKING within the hospital and its grounds to reduce these smoke breaks because some takes 30 minutes instead of 15. But there are still people violating this. I guess if you are a chain smoker and you have plenty of stress in you, smoking helps.

Who is the "you" you are referring to in your subject line? Who do you think reads this forum?
ItsTheDude, I am curious, how do you define "foreign nurses"?

Dude...seriously? I'm really surprised that a professional like you would post a topic like this. Are "foreign nurses" the last safe-to-discriminate-against people group? No? Well, how about we just replace the term "foreign nurses" with a different one...maybe we could say we like to be tougher on BLACK nurses, right? how about GAY nurses? and MALE nurses? Fat nurses, Yankee nurses, Christian nurses....I hope that your post is merely bad rhetoric. I'd hate to believe that you really are this shallow and unprofessional.
And I want to give a little shout-out for my 15yo son's nurse, Samuel. Samuel is from Kenya. He comes every night, 7 nights a week, to feed, dress, and bathe my son and get him ready for bed. At 9pm, Samuel leaves to go to his OTHER job--night shift in an LTC, the only guy on nights so you know they work him hard. On Sunday mornings he comes back from 9-11 so we can go to church, goes home and returns at 6pm to start all over again. We originally planned to have two nurses cover, but Samuel begged for the hours--he's trying to raise enough money to bring his wife and child over here.
I have nothing but the ultimate respect for this man--he works harder than anyone I've ever met. He treats my son with dignity and kindness, my son who can't even wipe his own butt or answer a simple question. Samuel never acts like it is anything but a pleasure to serve my son. Yeah, he has a heavy accent and I do have to listen well. Sometimes I don't understand or he can't call up the English word but you know? we manage. Samuel has become a part of our family--he is teaching us a lot about his culture and we're teaching him a lot about ours. I can't imagine if we had said "no foreign nurses!" I feel like we won the lottery with Samuel!
Hmph. Off my soap box now.
No, if anything I am more patient with them. Although I disagree with you, I respect you for posting a potentially controversial view. Some people are pc regurgitating sheep, and/or always submit "safe" posts. ...don't be short with foreign nurses, be proactive and write to the authorities debunking the nursing shortage myth and explaining the surplus of Americans willing and eager to fill vacancies.
