Fired for posting on face book

They just fired a girl for bashing the company's name on face book. Risking my life to go to a underpaid job at CH is not worth it is not really bashing the company. It was a negative comment but she never said they were a bad company just that she was under paid and not worth taking a chance with her life to drive in the snow. What are your thoughts about this?

Facebook is going to be the demise of society been saying it since day one. I have seen many people get fired broken up with, commit suicide, have their pictures stolen and get sued all from Facebook. Not worth it. Better to keep your life, thoughts, feelings and what you did on Saturday to yourself.[/quote']

Maybe it'll end up being more of a natural selection type thing...

Poster never heard of the NSA, or Google, or lapses in security, or etc.

It'll be years before young people realize that Facebook and all those other sites have the absolute ability to ruin their lives...

Please do not talk about me in third person. You are directly quoting me.

Obviously I have heard of the NSA, Google, and lapses in security.

1) The NSA is not concerned with an RN badmouthing his or her company. It is concerned with potential terrorism and threats to US security.

2) Google is Facebook's rival company. It is not going to help a nursing manager access a random person's account.

3) It is illegal for an unauthorized person to exploit vulnerabilities in a website's structure. This is what you are referring to 'a lapse in security' (finding a way to access user's passwords, database hashes and cracking them, etc). Regardless if an administrator somehow did this (very unlikely), their tracks would be easily found and the nurse would be winning a lawsuit for identity theft.

I fully understand that Facebook and other social networking sites have the potential to ruin a person's life. I have seen it happen. That isn't the discussion. The topic that you and I are discussing are whether a random person could somehow access a private profile.

I'm not sure why some people post bad things about the company they work for on FB. If you need to vent about it, maybe they need to vent to a friend, not on the internet. It looks like not much common sense was used at all.

My co-workers are my "friends" on FB, and not only is nothing negative ever said, but we all try to support each other in very day life. That's why I keep my posts short and quiet.

My thoughts? What a silly, silly way to lose your job. How embarrassing to (presumably) be so young and yet be so unaware of social media and its potential impact on your career/life.

I wish there was a rule that people must be a certain age before they could be an RN.

This is a very big, overgeneralization of "young" people. I'm in my mid-twenties. Well, I guess older now-27. Anyway, I've got a full-time job, mortgage, kid, husband, vehicle, excelling in school, and knitting on the weekends. I can easily find someone the same age as me who is living with their parents, unemployed, with mystery children, and a POS car. Same age-very different people.

And for what it's worth, in my experience, "old" people are the social media illiterates. I am constantly seeing many 50+ posting very personal information about themselves and, more importantly, other people's business.

We have freedom of speech in the US, but people forget that we are not free from the consequences of that right. When will people understand what's appropriate ? SMH

The First Amendment of the Constitution prohibits the government from restricting your right to free speech (and there are even some restrictions/limitations on that). Your employer is entirely free to do so. :)

It sounds like a "well she wasn't a great employee anyway, this a a great way to be rid of her." They probably would have found something else if it was not this. A valued employee would have gotten a stern talking to and a meeting where some of the concerns this employee had could be aired. I am on facebook. I don't air everything. But I have to say that the cvompany is just as unethical in monitoring these sites as anyone else stating something improper. Big brother is indeed here if it is true that companies have someone monitoring social media. My political belief system may be different than that of my boss etc.... does THAT make me a bad employee? Does that make me less loyal? Does it effect my work? No, but it could very well come down to losing your job. Why? because you don't agree with this or that.. It's such a joke that people are willing to hold other people to standards that they themselves cannot or will not live up to.

Tell me about it. I see older adults with their faces shown, where they work is public, city, name, and spew the most racist things I have ever seen in my life! I've known for people to contact the posters employer informing them of their posts and some have gotten fired.

"Unethical"? How? It's been well-known for years now that lots of employers routinely search social media sites to see what they can find out about potentional employees (search the same as any other member of the public could, I mean, not some special secret access search), and why wouldn't they? I certainly would if I were in a position to be hiring people. It's the internet; people who post stuff should be expecting that it's going to be seen by lots of people they didn't expect, and they should post accordingly. Why is there anything wrong with that, and why is there anything wrong with employers being concerned about their public image, as presented by their employees?

Your personal political views have nothing to do with doing your job, but, if you go around talking trash about your employer in public, you can reasonably expect some kind of consequences, up to and including losing your job. Maybe it's not fair, and in a perfect world, things wouldn't work that way, but it's reality.

Companies also set up google alerts that scour the web for keywords. If you shared with friends of friends on FB your rant can very well show up in a google alert fully creditable to you. No hacking or password guessing needed.

It wasn't I who told on her; she added co-worker on her facebook who told management. Some people loves kissing up for brownie points which usually gets them nowhere.
