I thought this was an interesting discussion that happened to pop-up on a certain social media site. How many of you conceal carry? And what do you think about prohibiting firearms on hospital property?
I think with the increasing violence these days, safety is a major concern for everyone. How do you protect yourself and still abide by the rules set by your facility?
I'm not sure where you live that you don't feel safe walking through BC cities... but there were 516 homicides in the entire country in 2014. There were 9 homicides in Vancouver (compared to 26 in Seattle). Victoria has a problem with parked cars being broken into, but it seems like a bit of a stretch to say their streets are "no better if not worse" than ours. Also, we may have once been coworkers. Hi neighbor. :)
Lol Hello, I am not too far from Portland. Keep being weird haha.
I am more referencing car thefts, drug crime, sexual assaults and other property crimes which Vancouver has a higher rater than Seattle per stats I just looked up. Homicides are on the decline though.
Interesting considering I live near Vancouver and Victoria which have far more issues than the gun-laden states to the south.Victoria and Prince George have immense crime problems and I didn't feel safe at all walking through the Big BC cities.
I laugh at holier than though Canadians regarding gun control, drugs, immigration or any other "American" problems when their own streets are no better if not worse.
I have literally never felt unsafe walking through Victoria or Vancouver. Even East Hastings, I make sure to be aware of my surroundings but that's about it. I honestly don't know anyone that feels unsafe in them either. Most of the folks from my high school moved to one or the other as well.
Really just be aware of your surroundings, walk with a buddy at night if you can no matter where you are in the world, but if you're feeling unsafe walking through Victoria or Vancouver you're either in with the wrong crowd or paranoid.
I have tried so hard to stay out of this conversation, as I am sure that ANY response given by ANYONE can and will be found offensive by others.
But, with that being said.....
As a Canadian, the thought of members of the general population legally carrying firearms scares and confuses me.
It almost scares me to the point of feeling as though I NEED a gun of my own for protection when visiting the Americans.
The fact that so many people are secretly carrying weapons for "safety" makes me feel extremely UNSAFE.
Would having a gun of my own increase my feeling of security? Or would it just help spread the fear to others?
I never felt a need to carry weaponry around in my daily life. If others feel the need, then I hope they use some common sense and responsibility. Most of the GSW I see at work are the self-inflicted kind.Statistically, an affluent, middle-aged suburban woman like me is not likely to be killed by a violent stranger. In the news, it always seems to be the husband, boyfriend or ex.
At my work the typical GSW usually falls into one of two categories. The first are escorted to surgery by police or correctional officers. The second are more interesting.
The usual story is a couple of guys, standing on the sidewalk or in a parking lot at 2am. They are discussing that week's bible reading or taking Grandma to church in the morning when a complete stranger walks up and shoots or stabs them. They can never give a decent description of the assailant and swear that drugs were not involved.
(Except for the people you don't personally approve of, apparently.)
You are funny! Apparently!? I think you are bothered my point of view has merit and it is something you never considered. Live and let live is my motto and the government that governs best, governs least. I think Jefferson said that.

Except imposing sterilization and abortion on it's citizens because future people *may* just cause a crime?
Cameron Diaz, please!

Wait, how is forcing ("bribing") abortions and sterilizations funded with taxpayer money "live and let live?" Am I missing something?

Your proposal is not original -- that idea gets brought up by someone and kicked around for a while every several years. I've heard it plenty of times over the years, and, no, I don't think it has merit. Offering poor, desperate people a bribe to terminate a pregnancy is unethical coercion just as much as the current government policy of refusing to pay for abortions but automatically paying for prenatal care and delivery is unethically coercing poor, desperate people to continue pregnancies that they might otherwise choose to terminate.
I am all for gun ownership. Any law abiding citizen should be allowed to own weapon that law enforcement has. The obvious exceptions being military grade weapons on par with tanks, jets, aircraft carriers, nuclear missiles, etc. That said, the argument I favor most that shows why crime rates have gone down over the past 40 years is abortion.
The Donohue-Levitt Hypothesis is an economic study that analyzes this phenomena.
Basically, who are most likely to commit crime? People from single mother households. Prison population data supports this. Who typically has abortion? Single pregnant women.
I am 100% pro abortion and this is my strongest argument in favor of it. In terms of mental health, I think a woman with near zero financial resources or support has to be crazy to have a kid. The kid grows up crazy, etc. . .a vicious cycle. Abortion puts an end to that and nips the criminal literally at the bud and prevents future victims from manifesting.
I also became pro abortion after reading the Donohue-Levitt hypothesis and I sure as heck am no Trump supporter.
