I thought this was an interesting discussion that happened to pop-up on a certain social media site. How many of you conceal carry? And what do you think about prohibiting firearms on hospital property?
I think with the increasing violence these days, safety is a major concern for everyone. How do you protect yourself and still abide by the rules set by your facility?

Every hospital in which I've worked over the years has prohibited firearms on the property. I would not be comfortable working in a hospital that didn't (too great a discrepancy between the employer's values and mine).
I've never considered owning a gun, let alone walking around with one.

I conceal carry and know many others who do too.
I bet people would be surprised about how many people do, that's the beauty of CCW.

Every healthcare facility for which I have been the risk manager for has had a prohibition against employees possessing weapons while on the facility property and violation can be grounds for termination. I suspect most hospitals and clinics have this policy. Having said that, I have been astonished to find out what can fit under a set of scrubs in a belly band, and if people are carrying concealed and keep their mouths shut about it, nobody at the hospital is any wiser.

Do you carry Mace then? I feel that one can never be too careful these days.

I love concealed carry threads! They always get interesting. I do not carry on my person, but I do have a pistol in my purse at all times. I do not work in a hospital and there are no signs out front prohibiting firearms. What if an enraged patient or family member comes in with a gun? That happened at a psychiatric clinic in Pennsylvania. I'll be prepared.

In psychiatry we can be fired for physically defending ourselves against an attack by a patient. I have lost long term, valued staff for being seen on camera striking a patient in self-defense.
That's concerning. What are you expected to do if a patient attacks you then? Just stand there?

I don't carry, don't plan on it.
I'm very uneasy with the idea of coworkers carrying. I've seen how much of my fellow ND'ers approach the idea of responsible gun ownership - they're just really expensive toys.
I'm okay with security taking out an armed intruder. I don't want to work in the OK Corral.
For the record, I own a .243 Savage, a 16 ga Remington, and share a 9mm Springfield armory w my hubs. He has a 12 ga, .273, 30-30, and 2 .22 rifles. So it's not like we hate guns. :)
Would you believe attempt a "therapeutic hold"?

Here we go again.... I do carry at times when I feel it is warranted.
You can put all the gun laws in place that you want, but the CRIMINALS are not going to follow them, so you are only hurting those that want to carry legally to protect themselves. Criminals or someone with bad intent doesn't care if a hospital or other facility has a sign banning weapons on the property, when are people going to get this?!
And when are we as a country going to understand that we do NOT have a gun problem we have a mental health problem in the US!!!

Rules or no rules. That why it's "concealed". Recall the Walgreen pharmacist?
He used his weapon in a robbery attempt... got fired for not following policy.
I'd rather be alive with no job.. then dead WITH one.
