Dr. Pimple Popper Thinks Nurses Have No Place Educating Patients

Why would a registered nurse explain this? Why not a dermatologist?

She peeked out of the window, saw mile-long line for sign "sunscreen RX and education, see our Board Certified Dermatologist first", fainted and accidentally pressed "delete" button ?

This really made me LOL!

It takes two years to see a dermatologist here, and the nurse advice line is right at the end of the phone....that's why.

I'm really curious where you live that it takes two years to see a Dermatologist?

I guess my area is just saturated because I live in FL.

You also dont need to be a MD to explain the difference between sunburn and sun poisoning.

You don't need to be a nurse either. I don't get why either has to monopolize educating. Lab Techs, CNAs, Dieticians, RTs, PTAs, OTAs, all know enough about the work they do to be able to educate patients on things that apply to their jobs. But unless you have the "RN" or "MD" after your name the medical world treats you like you're too stupid to explain how to get to the bathroom without falling. Healthcare needs so much less ego.

Her You Tube posts are lacking since she started on TV & now I won’t be watching her stupid show !

She pops pimples for a living-sounds like a stupid fetish taken to an extreme with a tv show and the LAST clinical person I would ask skincare advise of and take seriously. She can go back to her zit popping-we can handle the education on general healthcare-it’s part of our role and we are licensed to do so.

Gosh, I guess I shouldn't have done education once on the difference between a stroke and heat stroke. #notaboardcertifiedneurologist

I use to like her before her TV show.

That post makes her look like a moron. Does med school even teach these doctors the role and scope of the nurse?

Well, howdy, everyone. I'm the nurse/writer at the center of this.

Like everyone else, I found it kind of amusing that Dr. Lee would question my...authority? Expertise? Audacity?...in writing about sunburn.

It strikes me that this reflects the age-old physician attitude that nurses are their servants and nothing more. In fact, I'm writing an essay sort of along those lines.

I do appreciate everyone's support! It's no fun to get called out (even anonymously) by a celebrity dermatologist on Twitter. LOLOL

Such ego. This is very clearly indicative of her attitude and/or insecurity.

If she had made the comment in regard to encouraging her own dermatologist colleagues to be more involved in patient teaching, I would support that, since accurate information is welcome from both nurses and physicians and the more accurate health-promotion messages are shared, the better. But that doesn't seem to have been her intent.

Personally I prefer to move past (ignore) the physicians who really seem to believe that way and want to propagate that philosophy. Many decidedly do not think nurses are their servants. I never like to argue with stupidity if I can help it. It's too desperate. I think it is desperate to form a rebuttal against one loud mouth outlier about something clearly and solidly within my scope of practice. Better to chuckle/roll eyes and move on. Of course, I admit my choice of reaction is in line with my philosophy that physicians are generally just about the least of nurses' real problems. Other entities have shown themselves much more formidable and damaging enemies of nurses. Physicians vs. nurses is just so worn out, and not only that but I firmly believe it isn't remotely our biggest threat. We do ourselves a disservice when we focus on it.

I'm sorry for your unpleasantness in being called out this way. This is a case where it's fine to step back and let the stupidity speak for itself (which it does)!
