Did getting into nursing school seem like a life altering event?

When you got into nursing school, did it seem like a life altering event that actually made you feel like a professional and not just a student anymore?

Specializes in Case Manager.

Nope, not for me. I still don't feel like a "professional," just a student. But I can't say that I haven't grown and mature as a person since coming into the program.

This is my second time/degree in college. I got into nursing school (BSN) and thought I was in jr. high all over again so yeah it was life altering.

For me it was a life altering event. I am sure it is different for everyone. I went back to school after 33 years and just completed my first year of nursing, I have been going to school since 2008. I have one year left for my RN. So depending on your circumstance, it was a huge event for me. I have entered into the world of nursing and the bottom line is our patients, I love it!!! Learning, compassion and change and adapt.

No.

Getting out and licensed did.

Specializes in Psychiatry.

It didn't seem like a big deal.... it WAS a big deal. :nurse:

Specializes in Oncology/hematology.

Nope, but it was sure a socially altering event- that is, I now have NO social life :)

Specializes in Critical Care (ICU/CVICU).

I'm with That Guy.... graduating and being out and licensed is more life altering than being in school. BUT I did feel a sense of relief when I was accepted in the nursing program (no longer had to compete for a sopt.)

Specializes in Emergency Dept. Trauma. Pediatrics.

I was super excited because I waited so long, but it didn't feel like a big deal to me, even graduating didn't feel like a big deal. Other people made more of a fuss then I did. Getting licensed seemed surreal. Even now I don't feel like a Nurse. I think once I start working and I am the one in charge and when I say "let me go ask your nurse" and I am like Ummmmm oh wait. That's me. LOL It will all finally hit me and feel a lot more real. Going on the interview and the resume and all that was different and made me feel more like a professional. It's very different then when I wen to apply for jobs many moons ago.

Specializes in Telemetry, OB, NICU.

No.

It was a social life altering and for me mind-altering event also. lol. I didn't have chance or time to feel like a professional or anything because of all that stress.

Specializes in Peds Hem, Onc, Med/Surg.

It was a life altering event. But I didn't feel like a real professional till I got my first year of nursing under my belt.

Nursing school changed everything though. I made new friends, new study habits, new weight, new anti-social lifestyle, new chronic disease process. It was great. :D

Specializes in Pediatrics, ICU, ED.

It was a life altering event for me. I am an LVN and bridged to an RN program. People think the schooling is the same but, it was different for me. I made new friends and am learning new skills. I gained weight in RN school whereas I lost weight in LVN school. One thing which was common was that I don't have a social life. It's okay because, it will all pay off in the end!
