Diamonds in school?

Never heard that one.

We were told "discrete" studs (I guess that might mean nothing over two carats!!) only joking.

Plain wedding bands and avoid neck chains. Saw somebody grabbed by a crucific chain once. Even though she'd been told no necklaces she didn't think somebody would grab it because "its a symbol of love". Oh well, Haldol works wonders...

I've never heard of that either, could be they might get stolen or damaged. I'm afraid to wear my wedding ring because it might scratch someone, esp with elderly.

Ihave never heard of that either. We were told only wedding bands, earing studs, and no necklaces. Actually i have diamond studs and i wear them and they have never told me that i couldn't!

The only thing I could think of would be to keep you all "uniform" looking..when I was in the military, we were allowed to wear silver studs (enlisted) or gold studs (officer or chief and above) only with uniforms.

Of course, that's just a guess..dunno!

We were told no diamonds because germs get in the little crevices (prongs)that hold the diamonds in, versus slick round gold or silver ball earrings.

Never heard it. My ears are double pierced with diamond earrings that I wear just about every day. I also have a big diamond on my wedding band with 15 smaller diamonds and was never told I couldn't wear these. We're allowed to wear one ring on each hand, but to be honest with you, this far in the game, I doubt anyone would say anything to us if we wore a bunch of jewelry to clinicals. In fact there's a student in my clinicals that has a small stud in her nose and I don't believe she's ever been spoken to about it.

Maybe because a combative patient might grab the earing, yank it out of your ear and throw it across the floor? I don't like to wear my diamonds because it only takes a second for an irrational confused unrestrained patient to do just that. I'd rather lose something less valuable but I'm sure that's not why they have that rule.

Well this is a silly question and I don't even care but I'm just curious.. Why can't you wear diamond earrings in nursing school? I have heard it mentioned here and I know you can't in our school (only silver or gold studs or pearls). Is there something I don't know about diamonds?

I don't know....we're allowed to wear one pair of stud earrings. I wear my diamonds. They're okay with that, but I can't wear my diamond wedding ring, just a plain band. They said MOs breed in diamonds. I guess they think they won't get to our ears. Hmmm....

I wouldn't wear diamonds to work...depending on where you work. The risk of losing one, or a patient grabbing one. I've finally starting wearing a necklace to work with my uniform, but that's it. There's a girl in my clinical group who wears her huge engagement ring...No way! It's too pointy, would be afraid I'd rip my glove. -Andrea

Our clinical dress code has some of the following things in it:

hair must be of a natural hue (dang no purple LOL just kidding!)

only one pair of stud earrings

only wedding band (no setting though, it must be just a flat band)

no necklaces or bracelets (not sure on this but I think so)

hair must be off the shoulders

all white socks or stockings

all white shoes, no clogs, must be athletic or nursing shoes but not clogs and must be all white.

uniform - either the white flying nun outfit or the new uniform from Dove which is white pants, white vest and navy blue polo shirt.

or for our current class, our clinicals in Mother/Baby are in scrubs.

We've got this rule too, and when one of our students (who never takes out her diamond stud from her ear) asked why not girls best friend? her answer was "the bling bling can stress out patients and they are distracting".

It could also be that big diamonds/stones can be intimidating. You're trying to find a common ground with your patients or at the very least connect with them so they can trust and feel comfortable with you. Some might be put off expensive jewelry especially if they have a lower socio-economic status than you. For some diamond studs are something they'll never have no matter how much they scrimp and save.

My mother works with migrant children, she leaves the huge diamond ring my father bought her home because she knows how it is to be a poor migrant worker. Never did she think she'd ever own a ring like that. When my father gave it to her she was slightly in shock since she'd never seen diamonds that big up close and never thought she'd be wearing them on a daily basis.
