Had a kid bring his wet, bloody tooth and plop it right on my desk.

C'mon now!

Or the kid that did running knee slide into my office.

C'mon now!

The ones old enough to cover their mouths but choose to cough right in your face instead.

All together: C'mon now!!

Some things just make me shake my head.

Not only do I cringe everytime I am asked for medical advice from other adult staff, but today I was asked to diagnose a wound infection on a dog from a picture...that's right a dog...C'Mon TGIF

I am so over every headache being called a migraine these days!

You bet! And how about "walking pneumonia?" I cringe when I hear the words...

Oh you are so young, not trying to offend you or anything. But I'm just thinking as a young nurse you should be working at a hospital.

Why? Acute care nursing is not an area everyone wants to work in.

Teacher is giving me grief because one of my students had a sprain and fell once again yesterday and I want to give him a week off of PE even though his letter said only today. Doctor apparently said if he does it again, he will break it. Teacher is like "Because a licensed professional said only today, I'm doing only today." by email. I told the AP and she backed me up. I even called mom and she said yes, a week of no PE is a good idea. I emailed her, "Well mother decided that, even that a licensed professional said this, she agrees with me and wants a week of no PE."

Don't mess with me.

I'm in the same boat as Biscuit. I'm 27, have been a CSN for a few years, before that worked in schools and public health. Acute care is just not for me, never even applied for a position in a hospital. I'm not offended when questioned about it, but the decision to become a School Nurse in the area I live involved a lot of future-planning and realizing that getting in early meant that I could maximize salary/benefits by 35 and have a very stable financial future. I am often congratulated by School Nurses in my area for making the choice so young, and it is even followed with "I wish I knew how good this was when I was your age", but questioned by those not in the field.

I think it's interesting that a young school nurse is seen as such a strange thing. It gets commented on a lot in my day-to-day life. Every year a handful of people will ask me when I'm going back to school to "become a hospital nurse." Their faces when I explain that I went to grad school to specialize in school nursing always makes me chuckle.

Right? So many times I've been asked "Do you think you'll ever go back to school so you could be a nurse in a hospital?" Silly non-nurses.

Ha I get this from my friends from nursing school & my response is always NO! I know my career path has been unconventional, but what can I say? I'm a rebel!

I did a kinda conventional career path with the intention of becoming a school nurse, and I can't tell you how many times nurses in the hospital would balk at my "goal". "Aren't you going to be bored?"

My answer was always, "Maybe for a full minute during week 4 of my 8 WEEK VACATION EVERY SUMMER."

Ahh, the naive...

Same!! I was adamant on being a school nurse all through nursing school and my friends always said "but...school nurses don't make any money!". Since I was a SAHM, aside from nursing school, my response was always "well...since I don't work now, anything is more than what I'm currently making!". I always got the "touché" look from them when I reminded them of that! Plus, I've always had a calling to care for kiddos. I legitimately love my job. Even when I think people are being stupid, I still love my job!!

Why a hospital? That type of nursing isn't for everyone. Young or old, nurses are needed in many places, not just hospitals. Truth be told, BiscuitRN is probably learning and experiencing just as much, if not more, working within the school setting. Contrary to popular belief, school nursing isn't just lice checks and Band-Aids. We deal with some pretty complex stuff!
