Congrats to all those that are accepted and will be the class of 2015. I thought it would be nice to have our own thread where we can support each other along our journey. Mine is an ADN program, but I know some will be BSN as well.
With all that aside has anyone had their nursing orientation yet? How was it? What are some of the costs you have to dish out? Did it finally sink in that you will be starting nursing school soon?
Mine isn't until May 29th 9a-3p. I do know that our tops will be white and our bottoms will be green. I also know we are required to have an iPad which is included in our financial aid. I also know I have to pay $66.00 just for the drug test. The program pays for our in state CORI/SORI but I had to pay for my out of state one which was $31.00. I just payed for that today. We will be required to buy the books, stethoscope, name pin, uniforms, warm up jacket, lab coat, and more. So exciting. We will also schedule our classes on orientation day.
Lets get to know each other so we can support each other :)
Our program is like that, too. You attend the first year and can sit for the NCLEX-PN in May (and hopefully work over the summer!). After the 2nd year, you sit for the NCLEX-RN. At this point, I'm going to try the NCLEX-PN next summer and, hopefully, work part-time as an LPN until the NCLEX-RN. That way, I'll have some experience before I start applying for RN jobs.
I'm changing careers, so when employers look at my resume, they need to see more medical work and less finance/banking
Thats along the lines of what my thoughts are, as well. Whats causing my hesitation currently is whether or not I'd be able to find a job as an LPN which would work around my school schedule. But it would be great to get some experience on the resume before apply for RN jobs. I'm switching careers also, and although my resume has several years of supervisory and management experience which should look good and I'm currently working as a CNA, I'm sure employers would appreciate seeing nursing related experience on the resume, as well.......Yeah, my thoughts just keep going around in circles, I'm just glad I don't need to decide this right away! Lol
Hello Jenjer003! It's awesome to see their is someone else in class with me on here! I'm not sure about my physical yet, I was going to call the health dept. in okemah to see if they did them or not, then ask a local physician if she will do it. I'll let you know on that! And I'm not sure on the titers because I already had those immunizations. But I know the okmulgee Health Dept. does the TB screening for $10.
Thanks for the info about the TB screening. I found a place in Henryetta that does physicals. It's called East Central Oklahoma Family Health Center. Let me know if you want their address and phone number. I really wish our orientation was sooner. I want to know what our schedules are going to be like.
Can you get a titer done to check your antibodies? So that way whatever you don't have they will give you. I saw this on another place in this forum. Maybe inquire with your dr. and how to get that done if its at all possible. Hope that helps.
This is exactly what I did. I don't know if any of my records were destroyed in Andrew because I didn't bother going back to Florida. I just went down to my local county Health Department and requested titers for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. It ran me about $91, but your mileage may vary. It turned out I was good for everything except measles, so I just went back for an MMR and to start my Hep B series.
Hello and congrats to all of you!!!!!!! I officially start my ADN in the Fall and have orientation at the end of July. I just got done doing all the requirments before fall, CPR BLS for HCP, drug screen, physical, immuz., etc. Super excited but also very nervous. It is all new to me, former Business management for years, I'm an older student and mother of three girls ages 6, 4 and 2. Hoping I can juggle everything and handle it. My husband is very supportive but it will be hard for him to get in the groove with the kids since he just got back from AFG after a year.
I'm not class of 2015 but this forum suits me better than the 2014 post does (I graduate december 2014, so a year from this december!) because I just got accepted and have orientation this Friday, and I start my ADN classes this august!
I am super excited! I am dying to go through orientation and learn more about what to expect! I also can't wait to shop for some of the supplies I'll need, I love school shopping! I've already been eye-ing a stethoscope! Our uniforms are all black, which I am so thankful for, I see many people will be wearing white & I'm not good at keeping my whites white, and I'm glad I wont have to worry about underwear being visible through my uniform.
What is everyones schedule looking like?
BTW, what is everyone buying before starting school? On one hand I'm considering not buying anything extra until I need it. But then again, I like being prepared and I have read through many old posts of what students found helpful when they were in school. Here is the list I came up with. & how the items will help me. I'm still not sure if I will buy all of this, but I am for sure contemplating all of it. I thought my list may help all the other new nursing students like myself.
1. Binder(s)
I plan to use one binder for my 3 classes, and as it fills up, I will file away un-needed papers in binders/folders at home to keep my single binder organized and not overly-stuffed. Rather than making separate binders for each class I wanted them to all be combined that way if material overlaps I have it all in one place, and I can also study when I get a free moment because I will have all my stuff with me.
2. Binder dividers
Pretty self explanatory.
3. A quality stethoscope
I am looking at the 3M Littmann Classic II S.E. in the color raspberry. I thought of just going with black to be more professional and plain and then you wont see discoloration from it being dirty. BUT then I thought it would be harder for a classmate to steal a funky colors steth than a plain one that blends in. Especially if I shell out the extra bucks for a nice one! Plus it's an adorable color.
I might go with the Littmann stethoscope that is the cheaper. I keep reading you may lose it anyways?
4. Alcohol pads
For all of us that have been through microbiology, you know how nasty every little thing is, especially in a medical setting. I will be wiping down pens, my stethoscope, everything, you name it. Plus you can get a pack of 200 pads for a couple bucks off amazon.
5. A pin watch / FOD watch
This way I can have a watch for BP and such pinned right onto the pocket of my scrubs. I don't want a wrist watch getting in the way of me washing my wrists while washing my hands. & I can easily wipe those down with alcohol pads.
6. Pen lights -Multiples!
I hear some schools supply these, I dont know if mine will, I haven't been to orientation yet to know. But I found colorful ones on amazon that come out to a buck per light and having multiples will be helpful when one dies and I'm ready for another. & again, the funky colors will distinguish my items from others so there's not mix up.
7. Black Pens
I like pilot brand! They're pricey but can't be beat! I hear you'll need many black pens for charting. & a red pen & a sharpie!
8. Compression socks
I only saw this suggestion in a few places, But from what I read they will really help with leg pain while standing for many hours. & I will need all the help I can get with that.
9. Comfortable Shoes within the dress code
This has been overkilled with explanation by many people, we all know why it's important!
10. Pocket Notebook
I probably wont buy a clipboard unless I find it necessary, I believe what I'm reading when people say that it will just get in your way having to lug around a big clipboard, I'm trying to minimize it to what can fit in my pockets.
What has everyone else thought of getting?

I'm actually required to get a clipboard with the strong recommendation that it be a storage clipboard. I have to take my Kindle with me and have somewhere to put it along with my clipboard. To me, this sounds like a recipe for disaster. I'm not saying all people are evil, but I'd really hate to "lose" my stuff. I got this Vaultz Locking Storage Clipboard. It's not too bulky and it has room for my Kindle and extra papers.
