I know it resurfaces every now and then. I don't think it's widespread here at the moment, but I'm thinking I might be asked to address it. Thanks for any insight!
Ya know when I was a kid just learning the macarena was cool. These stupid challenges with kids now is ridiculous. Common sense not so common anymore.
Common sense replaced by common core. That is the one thing I reiterate to my kids over and over, "what is the worst thing that could happen if I....", and if that price is too much, don't.
Really? This was a thing years ago? Have I been living under a rock?! But you are right, more aware of everything now with technology involved. And I would just like to take a moment and thank the heavens above that there were no IPHONES or snazzy cameras when I was young. :)
I lost a cousin to "the choking game" 21 yrs ago. He was 13. That was the first I'd heard of it...my mom explained that he had strangled himself to "feel high." It makes me so sad to hear this is still around.
And then there is the Duct Tape Challenge...

When I was a sixth grader, many moons ago, my class played a variation of this game. It was more of a "fainting" game than "choking" game - the person would bend at the waist so their head was low to the ground, take 20-30 slow deep breaths, then stand upright against a wall, where another person would apply pressure to their chest until they passed out.
I remember telling my mother about it. She didn't believe me.
I was in middle school and did participate in the choking game - we used to do it outside the cafeteria during break in 6-7th grade. I just remember someone basically choking me until I woke up saying "did I go out!?" It lead to much greater experiments with drugs as a teen. It is very dangerous. I have seen seizures - it was mostly kids trying to find a way to Change the way they feel.

I did a safety lesson with my students regarding this a few years ago, surprisingly enough, a lot of them had tried it or knew of someone who did. My kids are high school age.
