Two hostess chocolate cupcakes
A bag of mini chips ahoy cookies
A chocolate yoohoo drink
A strawberry gogurt
A Danimals yogurt drink
A bag of Jax cheese puffs
THAT was his lunch! No sandwich, no main course, nada! I asked him if he packed it himself. He says "No, my mom did"
Needless to say, I didn't let him eat it and made him eat the school lunch which was baked chicken and rice. He is a super skinny kid that mom says is "picky" but he happily ate the chicken and rice lunch!

Wow. My kid is super picky too, and I pack his lunch most days, but he would get one..maybe two things off that list in a lunch. Like I could see me packing the yogurt drink and a bag of cookies...but its along with a peanut butter sandwich, string cheese and a fruit cup. And he knows his sandwich better be eaten if his cookies are gone! And those things are spendy!! Bread and PB are cheap!

Ah yes, the parent induced anorexia. I confess, my youngest will eat whatever YOU put in front of him, just not what WE put in front of him. Many a night he goes to bed hungry for his pride. His friend stopped me yesterday and asked why I don't send a healthy lunch. I proceeded to unpack his lunch with his never eaten applesauce and orange slices to go with his lunch meat (he won't eat a sandwich, SMH) and small amt of potato sticks. At least we have trash monitors who don't allow kids to throw out unopened food.

I'm not saying not to trust the kid but...what if they did pack their own lunch?
Every Single Time my 13 yr goes for a physical for like the past three yrs he tells the doc that he can't sleep at night because the dogs always lay on him.
Guess what, he can't and won't sleep without the dogs

IF the parent truly feeds the kiddo like that, do y'all think it possibly drifts into official (reportable) neglect territory?

i don't know that i believe that mom packed that bounty. Although i don't know that mom... i have plenty of parents around here that would see that as a perfectly fit lunch. These people also believe that fruit snacks and fresh fruit are interchangable items

I believe it - I referred 3 first graders last year for Acanthosis - and the numbers continue to increase.

Ugh, I believe it. One of the teachers brought a lunch like this to my attention. I guess she was trying to talk to the kid about it so the mother called me screaming that we denied her kid his lunch. I had another kid get carried into my office for falling while climbing on top of the cubbies. Once I was sure he was okay, I walked him back to the classroom where he proceeded to climb the cubbies again and grab and huge bottle of purple Kool-Aid. I had so many obese 1st graders come through my old school.

I see parents in a hurry every morning drive into the Donuts Shop to get, donuts, chocolate milk, pig in the blankets, pastries. Also I saw my last elementary students eating cereal with chocolate milk and then they would visit me later with stomachaches or vomiting. Now the bigger kids are eating Hot and Spicy Large bags of chips for breakfast and coming for stomachaches. The days of hot breakfast is almost gone!
TOTALLY!! Our kids all qualify for free breakfast AND lunch here. I see more often than not, kids in the lunch like carrying a Dunkin' Donuts bag, a McDonald's bag, etc. They still take the free lunch but usually eat the donut or cheeseburger instead. Makes me so sad. Also see lots of DD hot chocolates brought in as a "breakfast". They will drink some and then leave the rest in the cubby until lunch and drink the rest at lunch

Thank you for noticing this and taking steps to provide a nutritious meal for this child. It may be that this was a one-time deal, but I seriously doubt it. Continue to monitor and if this is indeed the food of choice brought everyday...I would discuss this with your school administration to see how best to handle the situation. Maybe the mother needs help in meal planning, or maybe they need assistance to get food and are too proud to ask for it. God bless you for being so observant!
