A strawberry gogurt
A Danimals yogurt drink
A bag of Jax cheese puffs
THAT was his lunch! No sandwich, no main course, nada! I asked him if he packed it himself. He says "No, my mom did"
Needless to say, I didn't let him eat it and made him eat the school lunch which was baked chicken and rice. He is a super skinny kid that mom says is "picky" but he happily ate the chicken and rice lunch!
Had a mother tell me earlier this week that her T1D kindergardener packed her lunch 2 days ago and she didn't know what was in the lunch bag. (First red flag). I opened the lunch bag to find 3 chocolate doughnuts, pringles chips, cheese stick and cracker and cheese snack along with sprite zero. I got the kid a hot meal, she refused to eat that of course! Called parent (also T1D) and was told to let her eat whatever she wanted.
We are not allowed to take a student lunch away and make them eat the school lunch nor are we allowed to tell a student what to get thru the lunch line. Only thing I can do is call a parent and make a suggestion about sending healthier options or suggest to the student to make a healthy choice going thru the lunch line.
I have a middle school aged great nephew in the same boat. Just saw him last night, my daughter mentioned that she thinks the "brown around his neck is getting darker". Yep, I see the same thing. Not sure when he is going to have to get care. (He did have a slightly elevated A1C last year. But, the dr. didn't really tell them to do anything different at that point in his young life. ) But, I have done all I can do. He just keeps eating and eating. It troubles me greatly.

Pretty sure he needs Vision Therapy as well. But, Hey...what do I know? (Does anybody else ever think that, sometimes it would be much easier to "just not know???")

We can't take a student lunch away either. You'd have parents screaming at you if you ever did that.
And the school lunches are healthier but most of the food goes in the trash.
I sat there in the cafeteria every day and watched the kids eat and was initially surprised by how many kids didn't really touch their school lunch and how much went into the trash.
I took care of a T1 kiddo from Kindergarten to 5th grade. He has an insulin pump. He regularly got those hot Cheetos.
There isn't much we can do besides send home educational material that gets tossed in the trash. We also did some educational classes but no one showed up.

We have healthy school lunches.
So many of them go uneaten and

Then they eat all this junk on a regular basis and have issues with stomach aches and constipation. To some families fruit snacks are just like fruit and potato chips are like a vegetable. However we have two options for our free breakfast and one is a protein breakfast with eggs, sausage, etc or what most kids pick-donuts, cinnamon roll, muffin, etc so the kids are starving two hours after eating their "whole grain" sugar. Should not be allowed but what do I know?
