A&P 1 Spring 2012 Check-in

Published

Hi all!

How is everyone doing? Our semester started later than most so we are having our first test tomorrow. I know many of you have already had your first test, how did you do?

We have a test tomorrow then on tuesday. I think tomorrow will be the 'easier' of the two tests because it is the lab test which is on the anatomical terms and the integumentary system.

At first I thought I'd never be able to memorize all the anatomical terms for the parts of the body. sural? crural? acromial? what?! but I got them down.

A&P will be your best friend throughout school, you will just keep expanding your knowledge.

Ok so I'm happy to report I did much better on my second test!!!!! on the first i got a 76, and this time i got a 94!!!! and combined with all my quizes and labs my midterm grade is an A!! Now i just need to keep it that way!

Excited to get back to class after this break. Home stretch!! Still holding an A... we can do it!

Test (lecture & lab) #2 are in the books and I am heading into spring break next week, but I still have a lot to study on my "vacation." I have been taking my phone and recording videos of my teacher going over the models we have our tests on for the muscles. Learning in a book is not even close to what the muscles look like on the models. I am done with class on May 2, so I think it is going to be a hard push to the finish to get everything in we need to since due to some circumstances caused by an outside person we are about a week behind. I cannot believe how fast this semester is going!

I hope it keeps going faster and faster! Can't wait to be done with these prereqs. :)

I just got my anatomy midterm back. 96! Hang in there everyone. :D

Hey everyone! Doing my check in for this semester. I had my bone practical today. Our professor gave us only 2 weeks to study 140 bones and get the spelling correctly for the exam. I've had a lot of things going on in my personal life so it was hard cramming in study time for these bones each day along with reading the chapters we have to go over. Between those 2 weeks, I completely disregarded the studying for the bones (DON'T DO THIS! lol), so last night I pretty much stayed up all day and night just cramming all these bones in my brain.

Surprisingly, I was able to name all 140 with ease. I definitely will not be doing this for my muscle practical. I went to class shaky and nervous but came out with a smile. Out of the 140 I know I missed one bone and that was because the timer ran out before I got to finish writing it in.

Lesson: do not cram everything in your brain the last minute no matter what's going on in your life. Flashcards helped me like crazy and associating bones with certain things helped as well but studying for a good enough amount of time (not one day please) helps tremendously.

Besides that, we are only on Chapter 7 of our books. I have lecture exam #2 coming up this Monday that I have plenty of time to study for and I WILL lol. There's not much time left before school is over for me (last day is April 23rd) and hearing from A&P 2 professors, they start at Chapter 15-16 so I may have to read the rest of the chapters on my own during the summer.

Long update but there you go :)

Got our results back from the second lab practical and second lecture exam. I got a 97 on my lab practical (would've got 100 but forgot whether to put lateral/medial on a couple bones) and got a 98 on the lecture exam.

We've got our 3rd lecture exam on Monday (joints, muscles, nervous system) and we started the cat dissection unit in lab today. I looked around the lecture classroom yesterday and it looked like half the students were gone. Our lab class has shrunk quite a bit, too.

We got our lab midterms back today. I already knew I'd scored 102%, but it was still nice to see it. I checked the course average for the midterm, and it looks like it's 56%. I know everybody at my lab table scored 102's, and I know everybody at the next table over scored 102s. Granted, 7 students is a tiny percentage of the total number of students in the course, but still -- that means there had to be quite a few really low grades. It's still blowing my mind.

Half of our class was missing last night as well. I know a lot of people got high 90s on the recent tests but that is the people I talk to. One person in my lab group missed one day of class and said that affected her grade as she got a 70 on the test.

Third exam complete. I didn't feel as good about this one; I didn't feel close to prepared. I actually forgot the word synchondrosis. Couldn't come up with it to save my life. I'm still facepalming over that one. I blame being sick over spring break. My plan was to use that time for additional studying. Instead, I used it to sleep and recover -- which I admittedly needed to do. In the end, I did better on the exam than I thought -- I managed an A -- so I'm happy. Still, I don't want to feel that unprepared again.

It seems this particular test was much more difficult for everybody in our class. That last two classes we had 11-16 A's; this time, there were only 6 A's in the class. 17 people failed, many scoring in the 20's and 30's (this according to an email we received from our professor).

This week we start our final unit: the brain, nervous system, and sensory organs.

We have a test next week on bones, joints and muscles. Then the week after will be the practical. Am I the only one that can't keep all the condyles, epicondyles, and tuberosities straight?

I had to withdrawal from my A&P 101 Ivy Tech class earlier this week because I had a failing grade and knew that I couldn't get to a 'C' within the next 4 weeks. The last day to w/d is April 8. I plan to retake it either this fall or the next spring at a different campus w/a different instructor. I'm not sure that my 42 y/o brain can handle all of this memorizing! LOL I've been having memory issues for a couple of years and don't know if I'm up to the challenge. Kudos to those who are doing well in Anatomy & Physiology!
