A&P 1 Spring 2012 Check-in

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi all!

How is everyone doing? Our semester started later than most so we are having our first test tomorrow. I know many of you have already had your first test, how did you do?

We have a test tomorrow then on tuesday. I think tomorrow will be the 'easier' of the two tests because it is the lab test which is on the anatomical terms and the integumentary system.

At first I thought I'd never be able to memorize all the anatomical terms for the parts of the body. sural? crural? acromial? what?! but I got them down.

Specializes in OR.

Here's my latest update: We've finished the cat dissection, and are ramping up to the brain and eye dissections (next week, I think). My study partners and I are working towards our finals. We went into Open Lab today (from open to close), studied the muscle models and reviewed the cat. As I type, I'm also printing out wonderful picture flash cards the program put online for us to help study the muscles.

My A&P Lecture final is May 9th (at 7am, we just learned -- ugh!). That's not so far away!

I had to withdrawal from my A&P 101 Ivy Tech class earlier this week because I had a failing grade and knew that I couldn't get to a 'C' within the next 4 weeks. The last day to w/d is April 8. I plan to retake it either this fall or the next spring at a different campus w/a different instructor.

I'm sorry to hear you had to withdraw, but glad you're planning to give it another shot. Good luck with it!

Update: Next Monday is our third exam. It will include bone/muscle tissue, the skeleton, joints, and muscle tissue. On Wednesday we finally did dissection as our professor would rather us dissect closer to the end of classes so we know what we're looking at. I got to dissect a fetal pig and was surprised that it was fun instead of gruesome. Next Wednesday we will be dissecting a sheep brain. I only have 2 more weeks of class left and between that will be our final on the nervous system and muscles practical. I'm really starting to go crazy now that it's winding down lol.

thx for the words of encouragement! i've signed up for an intro biology course for the fall 2012 semester.

the fall classes that i'm planning on taking are as follows:

* math 035 (again, since i had to withdrawal from this recently)

* biology 100 or 101 (don't have it in front of me right now)

* english 111 (english composition)

* medical terminology

i may take some classes at a different ivy tech campus than the one that i'm at right now. we'll see how it goes...

Update: My class is now winding down. We just need to read one chapter and the semester is over. We had an open book exam this past Monday and let me tell you, that was one of the hardest exams thus far. Everyone in my class was expecting it to be gruesome because it was open book. There were 90 questions and our professor gave us only an hour to complete it. The questions came from over 4 chapters of the book. I was sweating bullets trying to finish it. Definitely a tricky test even with the book helping out.

Greatest news ever so far is that our muscle practical is cancelled and the professor is giving us a break and giving us all a passing grade. We all vented on how much stuff there was to study in the next two weeks (muscles plus the whole nervous system, special senses) that it was driving us crazy. He finally broke down and gave pity on us so now I'm only studying hard core for the final which is on the 23rd.

I'm still going crazy but at least one thing has been removed from my plate. Unfortunately, I'll have to spend some time after summer class learning the muscles to make up for the practical being cancelled.

We still have a little over a month to go in our class. We still have a paper to write, 1 lecture exam, 1 lab exam and the final. The good news is that I got my muscle lab test back and got a 100.

We have our 4th lecture exam next Thursday and as long as I score an 85, I don't need to take the final. My exam grades have been 90, 95, and 98 so I know an 85 will be a piece of cake. Our 3rd and final lab exam is in 2 weeks. It's a cumulative exam and is just identification of bones, muscles, brain, spinal cord, eyes/ears. My first 2 exam grades for lab are 97 and 102 so I'm feeling confident I can pull an A on the cumulative exam. Looking forward to 2 weeks off before summer session and A&P 2 begins!

i spent monday methodically planning my fall schedule. i wanted to get 4 classes scheduled and seriously thought about mixing it up b/t different campuses. what i finally decided on was to take 3 of the classes at one of the indianapolis campuses and have the last one, medical terminology, at columbus. i picked a biology 100 class for a saturday which consists of both lab and lecture. looked up reviews for the instructor online, and she, a former nurse, has some pretty good reviews. i'm taking math 035 3 days a week: monday, wednesday, and friday; thought it would be better to take it 3 days for reinforcement purposes. we'll see how it goes.

i haven't heard anymore about my a&p class; i imagine the department chair will be giving our professor a grilling about why "everyone" dropped her class. she's been there for a while; she's not new, but i did hear that this semester she was teaching differently than she has previously. i will post back what, if anything, i find out about that...

Tonight was our last ever lecture night. We ended the class with Chapter 12, which is the Central Nervous System - stopped it at the blood brain barrier and just reviewed the last two chapters for the final.

Monday will be our final exam and I will be officially done with Spring semester and can RELAX! Lol. Well, relax for only a week until my Chem 101 summer class starts but at least next week I can breathe a sigh of relief.

Five lecture classes to go. We have been stalling on the cat dissection and have been successful until our next class. We finished nerves, started the brain and then still have three more chapters to complete in time for our final test. It is a lot of info and I am thinking the last exam will be the hardest one of the semester! But, I get three weeks off until I start A&P II, which I hopefully register for in 10 minutes. This midnight registration time is brutal, but it is the only way to get into the class I want. I get a repeat next Monday night for the fall semester. Small price to pay. Good luck to everyone finishing up this semester!

i took another psychology test yesterday but don't know my grade. we may take one more test in an attempt to boost our grade. the spring semester officially ends may 6 at ivy tech. i checked out a biology, chemistry, and medical terminology book from the school library yesterday to get an idea of what next semester will be like. the columbus ivy tech is a nice one. it's part of indiana university/purdue for those of you who aren't familiar w/the columbus, in area...

My A&P I final will be May 3. So two weeks until the end!! I was hoping for a B, but I bombed the Muscles test and I am thinking I can't do good on the rest of the tests. I have lost my confidence. Trying to get my mojo back, but if I end up with a high B, I will be fine with that.

I have already registered for Summer and Fall, so I should be finished with pre-reqs by the end of the year. Wishing you all well.

Ncbutterfly - just jump right back in!

We had our muscle/nervous system(overview, CNS, brain) lecture test on Tuesday. I got a 94 which is my lowest grade yet. There was a lot to study and I made a couple of mistakes. On one, I changed my answer thinking the teacher was trying to trick us. She wasn't and my original answer was the right one. Also, we had to do some multi part questions. On one of them, I put down the wrong answer and told myself it was the wrong answer but then somehow convinced myself it was the right answer, meaning I got the question after it wrong as well.

I don't feel too bad about my grade on the test because there were quite a few people who had been getting 90+ on the tests up to this point and ended up getting in the 70s. I think it was just a lot to study, there were some 'thinking' questions on the exam as well that might've tripped people up.
