After 4 years of working full time and attempting prereqs Im now finished with all required courses to apply to the nursing program at my school (San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton CA). The only proble is that I now have a 2.0 GPA (ALL C's in anat, physio and micro) However, I have A's in english, phsyc, math etc. Does anyone know of a school that doesnt look at JUST your science gpa? Due to financial issues I cannot redo more prereqs. I need to get into a school ASAP and get this over with. Ive been trying for so long, at 28 I cannot continue to take classes at my local JC. Also, im over the 90 credits and will not qualify for fiancial aid. I need to find a school that looks at overall GPA. Someone please advice. Appreciate any comment. Thank you!

I don't know of any legitimate program that would let you in with that science GPA. Most schools I've looked at require a 3.0 science GPA and the reason being is your nursing classes are based on your science pre-reqs. If you don't have a A or B in micro or AP, then the chances are you probably won't do well in nursing school.

Your other option and I'm not sure its an option would be to look for a LVN/LPN program? Even the ones around here that aren't quite as impacted as California though seem to require a 3.0 science GPA.

I don't know of any schools that look at only your overall GPA - most, if not all, nursing schools pretty much only look at your science or pre-req classes GPA. and most require you to have at least a 3.0 in those. the school I went to actually requires an A in all science/pre-req classes because of how tough the nursing courses are. In nursing school the grading system is super high and tough - I think an A was 92-100, a B was 85-91 and a C was 76-84. So the admission requirements are usually pretty tough because they want to make sure you'll be able to make it through the program.

There are nursing programs specifically BSN programs that looks at the overall and pre-req as their requriments; and there are also ASN programs that just look at the pre-req only, but they are very competitive. A 2.0 gpa as a pre-req may not work to your advantage. The only thing I can recommend is go towards the LPN route and then transition to the LPN-RN route.

Even going the LPN route, you'll be hard-pressed to find a program that will let you in with a 2.0 science GPA. Nursing school is just plain competitive.

Have you tried looking into nursing schools that aren't junior colleges? I go to a 2 year nursing school, and I have a friend who went to JC for 2 years and got a 4.0 GPA. The school was so competitive that they said she would be waiting at least a semester between finishing her pre-reqs and getting into the nursing program. She transferred to my school to finish the nursing requirements. Most of us were automatically accepted into nursing/clinical courses, although there is a pre-clinical track. They accepted any credits that she got a C or better in the class. I think it's really competitive, and it might be a long wait if you want to continuing going to this school. Someone told me it took them 6 years to complete their ASN! :uhoh3: Good luck!

I know you said finances are an issue but I think you would be better off retaking the sciences. Is it possible to take the sciences at a 4 yr uni? That way you would not have the max credit issue that you have now at the 2 yr school.

Thanks you guys for all your replys. Ive been trying so hard for so long. I like the great suggestions some of you posted about going to LPN route. I should look into that. Has anyone ever heard of going out of the country (IE Canada) and possibly getting into a program there? Also, i was looking at programs like Rad tech . . they have similar prereqs and they look at ALL 7 prereq GPA combined, which would give me a high 3's but I heard Rad tech jobs were IMPOSSIBLE to get. :( :( :( I want to be in health care so if anyone knows of other routes please suggest. Thanks again everyone!

Hi!

I graduated in May from a diploma nursing program in Va. I took all my pre nursing courses at a community college and just like you got A's and B's in everything except Anat. and Micro. which both I got C's in. I got into the nursing program on my first try. I struggled a little bit through nursing school but managed to pass everything the first time around and I'm now proud to say that I'm an RN working on the Surgical Floor in a hospital :) So there is hope!!!

Suggest you look for an LVN program, then try to get into an LVN to RN program. However, you need to expect it to be a difficult road, either way, as most schools require at least a 2.5 or 3.0 minimum GPA.

I agree with what others have said about the LVN route (although didnt they just stop the LVN program at Delta and are only doing a Psych Tech program?) SJDC is a tough one to get into with science grades like that, as is MJC (and many other programs) If you are looking into Rad tech you may want to look into Ultrasound Tech. I heard Consumnes has a new US Tech program, not sure how tough it is to get in or prereqs though..

Does anyone know of an LVN program near the Stockton , Ca valley area that is cheap?
