I was wanting to start a thread to see what the average gpa is nationwide at the time of your application. I am down in south Mississippi and it seems to be anywhere from a 3.0 to a 4.0.
First of all, please do not get discouraged by all the high GPA's posted in here. The nature of the question makes those with high GPA's post them and those that dont shy away. So the GPA's are skewed to the high end. That being said I just started my second year of pre reqs and am 38 credit hours in with a 4.0 and all my science pre reqs done (hurray for no winter or summer break). My program requires a 3.0 to apply but recommends a 3.4 to be competitive. I am going for a 4.0 so I can apply for a few GPA based transfer scholarships.
Hey LuLutheClown...I also applied for the cos nursing program for spring 2011...I have a 3.6 in the bio (two A's and 1 B) what do you think? Do you know how many they are accepting and how many applied exact? Thanks
They are accepting 70 students for sure, although they have accepted 80 in the past and an article in the Visalia Times Delta reported that they are accepting 80. During the meeting, it was discussed that anything higher than a 3.2 in the three sciences and English (the pre-reqs) would be accepted. 3.0 maybe, below 3.o unlikely. However, if there are only a certain number of seats available, all those at the given gpa will be randomly selected from.
From what I learned at the meeting, you are most likely in. What is you English GPA?
This may come to surprise but applied my first time to a school with a 4.0 and got denied and the applied with a 3.4 and got accepted lololol sooo its not just your GPA but what classes you have already taken but yes from the nursing students I know and that are in my classes they are all above 3.0
i agree with student4life. most students with a less than perfect gpa are more likely to shy away from posting their gpa. well, not me. i have a 3.1 gpa. i have worked very hard for every b that i have earned. although i may use the excuse that most of my classes were taken 8+ years ago and i could have done better. i may never know. bottom line, i am happy with my above average grades. there is a reason why schools post a minimum gpa requirement. if everyone was a 4.0 there would be no need for it. just as people come from all walks of life, great nurses come from different sorts of education.
i called my school today to check out the stats for last year. i wanted to know something to compare it to. i attend the community colleges of baltimore county. this is what i found...
out 385 applicants 168 were accepted
roughly 100 of those applicants were rejected because they didn't meet all requirements
gpa range from 2.58 to 4.0 with an average of 3.36 gpa
ccbc is one of the best nursing schools in maryland. it has one of the highest pass rates for first time testers taking the boards.
:heartbeat i wish everyone the best of luck! :heartbeat
HACC (harrisburg community college, pennsylvania) uses a point system in which you can score a max of 100 pts with a maximum of 37 credits in pre-reqs. the AP 1&2 and Micro are weighted by grade point (an A is worth 4, while a C is worth 2 points, so a 6 point possible spread)) and acceptance scores are variable depending on which of 5 programs you want, but a 92 is considered marginal.
a 92 can be had with straight B grades (3.0). most of the programs are accepting 94-95, which is straight B plus A in the 3 science courses. all 3 of the science courses must be C or better. passing grades in the gen ed courses are not weighted, and the GPA is weighted only in a doubling calculation that is worth 4-8 points (2.0-4.0 avg).
looks like i will be at 96-98 points by end of pre-reqs in december.
I have a 3.8 overall and a 4.0 in my nursing pre-reqs. I have a bachelor's degree in history, so about 150-160 credit hours total. The BA was at a large state univeristy and completed 4 years ago, the nursing pre-reqs have been at a community college and I started last fall and finished this summer. I've applied to a large state university's (different state/school from my BA) Accelerated BSN program. The minimum required for application is a 2.5 overall AND 2.5 pre-req GPA. The average GPA of accepted students last year was 3.4 overall and 3.6 in pre-reqs.

Hi, would anyone mind sharing how many total semester hours your "overall GPA" includes?
