Why do you think it is beneficial to have a second nurse available during a catheterization?

Published

I am doing a project and would really appreciate if some RNs would answer these questions (or even one of the questions) for me! Please and thank you!

1.) Why do you think it would be beneficial to have a second nurse available during the urinary catheterization process?

2.) How do you meet the  patient safety goal of CAUTI prevention in your clinical practice?

3.) What are some  barriers you have noticed which prevent this NPSG from being met in your clinical setting?

4.)  Identify other measures which are in place to promote the meeting of this goal in the clinical setting?

yeah what was I thinking. This website is full of older  and quite arrogant nurses. I asked a simple question and 2 people managed to answer it with a decent answer. More than happy this generation is retiring from the profession. We don't all have the experience and knowledge you have and the more you give people a nasty attitude the less we learn. The younger the nurse the sweeter and more willing to help. I'll go to Reddit and ask the question, good riddance.

And NO it is not a 'homework assignment' it is a project, that's why I said it was a project.

Interesting who is giving 'projects' of this magnitude to nursing assistants* who are in nursing school (per this previous post of yours;

but it's NOT a homework assignment you say .....

*Obv not a diss to nursing assistants

Yes, I find that insulting people that I ask for help generally works well.

No, actually you posted your "project," consisting of four questions, without any attempt to answer it.  Then, when you didn’t get the answers you were seeking you responded in a sparky, hostile manner.

Nope, not anytime soon.

I am more than willing to work with and help any of my coworkers; as long as they are willing to learn.  When I encounter the attitude you’ve shown here, I generally wash my hands and move on.

It's been my experience that arrogance and sweetness, like all personality characteristics, are equally distributed, regardless of age or experience.

Yes, Reddit is such a reliable source.

Best wishes.

Nursing Patient Safety Goals

Are you sure you don't mean National Patient Safety Goals set by the Joint Commission? That's what I'm most familiar with NPSG standing for. Additionally, CAUTI isn't the focus of the infection goal for 2020- handwashing is.

We do not use 2 RNs in the OR. It's just not possible- would require 2 circulators per room. A floater would still not be efficient with the number of patients who require foleys during surgery.

I've had several clients who required straight caths every 4 to 6 hours. As a private duty home health nurse, I didn't have anyone available to assist.

And as far as I know, they didn't end up with UTIs.

As a pediatric nurse, I haven't had many indwelling caths.

Question - how can it be determined that a cath'd pt with a UTI DIDN'T have the UTI BEFORE catheterization??? Like maybe it was UNDIAGNOSED prior to cath insertion??

Perhaps, the CAUTI issue may be overblown? Am just asking seriously.

In my hospital, any patient ill enough to have a foley catheter placed has a UA done before it's place or as it's placed. I'm not saying it's any sort of official "policy", because I have no idea, but it's pretty standard practice. Elective procedures where a foley might be placed require a UA, as well. It's part of the pre-op check list.

Why is this even a project? It's common sense that to even ATTEMPT to maintain sterility.. it would require two people. Does not have to be another R.N.

Just please.. somebody hold the flashlight for me... so it's not a total stab in the dark.

OP, sorry that some nurses are so hostile.  "Why is this even a project" is rude and condescending.  Evidently with all the people attacking you there are a lot of rude and condescending nurses here, who've forgotten what it's like to be in school and have to do projects.

I think you can do a sterile cath by yourself as long as you are organized and have a patient who can do what you ask. And in the case of a female patient one who isn't too heavy.  I've found it's hard to do a sterile cath with some of the heavier or more pregnant females as they can't hold their legs apart as well and you need someone to hold their labia apart.  It's been years since I cath'd an adult so I can't really speak to the rest of your question.  Good luck with getting your answers, I hope you take screenshots so at least your instructor can see you tried to do this.

Far from a joke, I gave you excellent advice. You would be wise to respect your elders.

She probably would respect her elders if the first line wasn't rude and condescending. ?

Oh honey, I have a solid 20 years left. IDK about the others.

I’ve never polled a non-representative anonymous and unverified sample on the internet for an EBP project before. Much more effective to do a CINAHL search and look for meta-analyses and poll unit nurses on their practices to address their specific practice/unit specific challenges when doing process improvement. Online is helpful for gut checks or direction if you don’t know where to start but CAUTI prevention is something there’s going to be a huge body of research on.

Thank you! This would make a great template response for students attempting to do research on AN using the method employed by the OP.
