Where and when do you study?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I thought it would be fun to post

1. Where do you study? (Home office, in bed, school, library, etc, and WHY? Can you only focus In a library? Would you never get anything done if you were in the living room with the distraction of the tv??, etc)

In addition: 2. When do you study?? Early morning? Late at night after work? Etc.

I study at home or school. If I am at home, it's in the living room on the couch by the window open because I enjoy the fresh air coming in. At school, if I had time between classes, I'd make the most of it by studying and doing homework. I've got a little one and noisy neighbors, so preferably, I like to do it at school without the distractions.

As to when, I will study anytime I am able to. I am not too picky as long as I have the time to study.

I used to study in my bedroom at my nice big desk.

For some reason, I read that as "bathroom" the first time and had to do a double take. I thought "A desk in a bathroom? That's new."

I like to study in the morning. I have a large, simple desk that I set my books on and utilize my laptop for classical music. Starting early makes me feel like I have a little more leniency in the afternoon to relax and be lazy. Definitely will be changing that when I start nursing school in a few weeks.

Usually couch or bed. A lot of my work got done when I worked overnights at a hotel. Do homework or die of boredom...

My husband and I will be moving back to the states in about 1.5 months, so that means a "new" house. I plan on setting up an area in the dining room or in a second bedroom just for my to study and do school work. Right now, we live in Japan and our place is quite compact. I am looking forward to it! A space of my own! :nailbiting:

It kind of depends where someone is at the moment. If I was at school and had gap periods between classes, I would study at the library at the individual seat. If I was at home,I'd study in my room at the desk. If I was waiting to pick up someone or going somewhere I could study for some amount of time. I find I get studying done best at home. The library can be distracting with people talking and stuff. If I had time in the morning before class I would go over briefly material that would be covered that day. After class ends I would study full on after eating a meal(not too much though).

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

I studied at Starbucks or at the library, for the most part. I eventually learned how to study on my patio. Generally, studying at home is the best way to get my laundry and dishes done. :)

I studied anytime. Whenever necessary.

Okay, I'll answer questiin number 2 first. I study anytime after noon. Whenever I can. Between classes, before dinner, after etc. I take breaks often and read about half a hapter of a book (I know what you're thinking.. 'how could I possibly want to look at morewords on a study break?!' Well fir me, I read to relax. It works for me to not get out of the frame of mine and concentration of using my mind but instead keeps my brain active and can sometimes help me remember stuff. By this I mean in exams I might be trying to remeber say one of the principles of care. And I can go 'oh I remember reading about that. It was when that character moved into their new apartment before villain caught her.' Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt.

As for question number 1; I study with music on or with the TV on in the backhround playing something I've seen many times so I don't mind missing parts while I'm studying. Most of the time I'll tune out background noise such as this but its always nice to look up once in the while during say a sip of coffee or whatever and not be in complete and utter silence, for me just doing something different even if its for less that 5 minutes; gives me enough time to have a mental break and decide whether to continue with the topic I'm studying, test myself or start on something else. For me, I listen to music and need no distraction until I can get into 'the zone' when I'm writing my coursework, essays etc. because everyone starts off slow with those and then gets faster and faster. But as for studying for exams I can do it anytime, anywhere. Sometimes I study in the car before class when I arruve a bit too early. On sunny days I'll inflate my air bed and sit out the garden surrounded by books with my iPod plugged in and on days off that are sunny when I plan to study for most of the day, I use a quick pitch tent, fill it with pillows and all sorts of stuff, a jug of water/squash and retreat there in my owm little study sanctuary. Little thungs like this make me able to concentrate for long periods of time. I love socialising with fellow nursing students, they are the only ones who can understand the demands we have to deal with but study groups don't work for me. Being alone while studying is what works best for me and I live in a student house during term time and share with two business students, and I find their perspective on things so enlightening sometimes because they have their own demands for their course and it can be refreshing to talk about their course for a change.. get to know what other people go through I find helps you to reflect on your own learning, try their techniques and apply it to your own studies. It may be the best thing you do, if it works great. If it doesnt try something else. Since ive started college/uni one of the most valuable things as far as studying goes is to establish the right atmosphere for you BEFORE you begin studying. Bevause, if its wrong, you might find yourself procrastinating and thats never good because you start to think you'll never learn this procedure, you'll never remember this legislation that protects vulnerable people from harm. You will, you've just got to find the environment that work for you,

Currently, I study best on my covered patio. No inside distractions and I live in a pretty quiet area. However, I don't know what I'm going to do when it gets too cold to sit outside!

I focus best in the school library and in the mornings. Studying at home can work, as long as I eliminate any/all distractions and have a designated study spot :)

Hmmm...well this changes for me. I work per diem in the hospital overnight. I have clinicals and theory during the day. I have 2 boys, 1 of whom is in football right now (ugh). So, as of present time, I find myself studying early mornings at my desk in my room with coffee in tow before everyone wakes up. I get a good hour or 2 in that way. Other locations...dining room table downstairs, Starbucks, the library NOT at school, break room at work, and car. I have to get it in where I can, but I know me, and I have to be able to be awake enough and ready to retain the info as well. Quiet works best for me, sometimes with a little background music. I cannot study at the school library because I'm always running into someone, and then I chit chat. Groups don't work well for me because, well...I talk...a lot!

This is a very helpful post.

I study when my kids are in bed. That calls for late nights and early mornings. My kiddos are 2 and 7 so they are a distraction. I also like to study at school.
