Where are the men?

Well hello Ainz, I am a male. I am starting my 1st year of a 2yr ADN program at South Suburban Comm. College here in the Chicago area ,and I would love to know the answer also. I am one of 4 guys who applied, and I am not sure if we all got in or not. I won't know till August 13, when we have our orientation. I pray that I won't be the only guy in the program. Trust me I love women,but I would love some other testerone around besides myself to relate to.

I chose nursing to help others and give back for what others have done for me. I am a above the knee amputee from having cancer when I was 12. I also have to say that men are not only showing up short as nurses or in nursing school, but men are missing in school period. I have been in many classes where I was the only man besides the teacher.... I wish I had the answer. I am going into my second career and nursing is my ultimate choice. So here we go.... Wish me luck all.

"Why haven't more men entered the field of nursing over the years?"

There are numerous threads on this subject if you are reallly looking for more information.

Basically, more men HAVE gone to nursing school and received our RN licenses, BUT we also leave the field in percentages much higher than the percentages of female nurses during the first couple of years of actual practice, once we see what is, and isn't, going on.

So overall the total proportion of men in nursing hasn't changed much since early in the 1900s, it has remained about 4%-6%. And I wouldn't expect it to increase in the near future, given the stunning dysfunction throughout the field.

I am male and will be starting 1 st year nursing classes Aug. 25:roll :roll . I know of at least one other male entering the program I'm going into at U Colorado HSC. A few months ago I did a nurse shadow shift at Denver General and was surprised that most of the RN, CNAs etc. on that particular shift were male! So maybe the situatin is changing? I've also noticed that in my A/P classes it was mostly female.

I start my ASN program Aug. 18 and there are 6 males including myself that are entering Nursing 1. I think there were 6 that entered the class prior to mine. Yep...in quite a few of my pre-req classes I was the only male...I didn't think it was bad at all, as a matter of fact I enjoyed it being that way. Also, I worked at a clinic in the Urgent Care for 7 years where I was the only male on staff (besides the doc) and got along great with everyone. After serving in the military for 3 years and working with nothing but males, it was a welcome change to work with all women. The only thing is, most men have many questions about women to begin with, I thought my questions would be answered..NO WAY...I have more questions now than I ever did....LOL.:chuckle

Men...in general...are intimidated by women in positions of power. It is only human nature for the male species to have a drive within them that dominates and protects their territory around them. Having a woman dominate and control them is NOT the design of men. For those of you who believe in God, we know this to be true. For those of you who do not believe in God...you may or may not get the gest of what I'm saying.

In fields that are predominantly "female controlled", can we blame men for running the other way....especially if being controlled by women means a man has to cowtow to stupid demands and abuse that nurses (mostly women) love to bestow on each other........goes with that saying "Nurses love eating each other".........the catfights, the clicques they form, the jealousy, and so forth. Women SEEK a position of power over each other. MEN were given that birthright to be strong powerful and protective by God.

I'm abbreviating a lot of what I'm feeling, but I'll let this stand as is for now. :)

Those who WANT to be in nursing are. If they dont' want to be in nursing, I don't want them in either. We have enough malcontents in nursing as it is, both in mgt and in the workforce in general. I don't think we should actively recruit men over women; just recruit qualified young people in general. Those who want to, I would welcome them, regardless of gender.
