Where do you find new grad nursing jobs in VA?????

Published

Hi all,

I am from California, just found out I passed the NCLEX last week, and am currently looking for a new grad nursing position in Virginia. I have sent out my application to many places but to no avail.

Anyone know of hospitals that have entry level position out here??? I saw that some hospitals have residency programs twice a year, but I don't want to wait another 4 months just to apply.

Also, should I go directly to the hospitals and track down nurse recruiters or nurse managers? Applying over the internet seems so impersonal and this field is so competitive nowadays...

Anyways, any insight would be much appreciated! :)

Apply everywhere. It would be a good idea to call HR and ask if you could fax or email them your resume. Many of them foward to unit managers...etc. Also go back and reapply at places when the 90 day period is up or getting close to being up. Attend open houses at hospital or free seminars. You would be amazed at who you will run into. Its all about networking. Even making yourself a business card 50 cards to start with...just to get your name out there. Its all about networking and thinking outside of the box.

I am not aware of any centralized database of RN job openings. You can check online for the names/websites of the 110 or so hospitals in Virginia -- and then google away to see if they have any openings.

Each hospital has their own schedule for interviews. Some started accepting applications from May grades last December (and started making offers in January). VCU, for example, accepted applications from new May grads for only 5 days in March. Other facilities ask applicants to wait until after applicants have a Virginia RN license.

You will need to scout around yourself and see where different facilities are in the process. Definitely attend any Open Houses that any hospital is sponsoring.

For hospitals that made offers earlier in the season, there still may be some openings in the less popular units (neuro, ortho, and bariatric are often the least popular among new grads).

Good luck.

If you are in Northern Virginia area, you have the option of working in DC as well.

Try Inova or PWH. My 2c.

You can call INOVA's nurse recruiter's but we disbanded our new grad training staff last year and have yet to replace them. INOVA hires very very few new grads, and does not have a residency program.

Virginia hospital center in Arlington has new grad fellowship program-OR nurse in few weeks. Call their recruiters, don't waste time on emails.

Hi Regina,

I am also a new grad nurse and I just passed my boards and Im looking to move from NJ to Virginia. Did you ever find a job? Or do you know which ones hire new grads? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Try Winchester Medical Center (Valley Health) in Winchester, VA. I was hired as a new grad with no problems, and I hadn't taken the boards when they hired me years ago. I also relocated from NJ to WV, but do work in VA. Website is www.valleyhealthlink.com. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I'm kind of looking for something closer to the DC area though. I will check it out regardless. If you dont mind, how was the transition for you? I just graduated and my parents think Im crazy for moving somewhere where I have no family, although I do have friends down there. I just kind of wanted to go elsewhere since Im still young. Now I'm just going crazy applying everywhere that I can hoping I get a call back from someone. Well any information you would have about moving would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!! :D

The transition was fine, lol...and I went from having stores, gas stations, etc. withing a 2 minute drive to living in the country and mountains of WV - nothing out here!! But I love it!!!

VA isn't that far away, you can hop in the car at anytime and visit your family in NJ. Best of luck in your search. DC isn't that far from Winchester, about 1.5 hours away.

What about UVA? I don't think that's been mentioned yet. They have a new grad cohort starting in Sept and October, there are PLENTY of RN Clinician 1 positions online right now.

Hi there 2bTrauma...Congratulations on the job...What unit are you in? and what unit would you recomend for a new male RN in WMC? A this point I, would take anything and would even drive 2 hours one way from Fredericksburg to WMC just to get experience. I also saw that they check your credit, drug test (naturally of course) and do physical testing. How was the interview process and all the other stuff? Any info would really be appreciated...Thanks...:)
